I got into Metal in late 2000 when I started listening to Tool a lot. That was eventually followed by Metallica and in Novermber 2001 I started listening to Opeth, In Flames, etc.

I voted for Still Life, by the way.

I voted for Still Life. I got into Opeth after my friend basically drugged me into paralysis from the neck down and subjected me to it about a year ago. I got into metal around 96 or 97 starting with Metallica (pre-black album stuff mind you)

I remember liking the 80s hair metal scene as a young child, sadly. In 1988, I was introduced to Bathory, but didn't immediately like it. I stayed with Metallica and Megadeth while venturing into the alternative scene through the mid-90s.

It took me until 1999, the Still Life era, for me to get into Opeth. I had absolutely no knowledge of Opeth's existence until then. Goes to show you how bad certain metal scenes can be!

My favorite Opeth album is Morningrise followed by Blackwater Park or My Arms, Your Hearse.

I got into Metal from a close friend of mine. It all started around April 2002. At the time, it was his favorite genre and he began interducing some music to me. I didn't know what bands they were at the time, but here are some of them: Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Balsagoth, Children of Bodom, Opeth, MY Dying Bride, Mayhem, Megadeath, Strapping Young Lad, Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Marylin Manson, Jack off Jill, and more bands, not all metal as you can see... I remember after listening to one of his death metal albums he asked me what I thought of it and I simply replied in an innocent voice, "I don't like that growling," referring to the death growls of an unknown band. I recongized the genious of the insturmentals, but at the time, I didn't like the growls (possible Wild Child's of CoB or maybe Mikael's) When he came over to my house I burned 3 Mike Patton albums and 2 random others. They were: Faith No More (Angel Dust - 10/10), Mr. Bungle (Disco Valente - 9/10), Fantomas (Director's Cut 6/10), Children of Bodom (Follow the Reaper 10/10), and Opeth (Blackwater Park, 10/10). I didn't listen much to Opeth and sided towards the others. I gave BWP to my ex-girlfriend, attempting to scare her away... I think it worked... she stopped talking to me... Oh, I do believe that it was Children of Bodom that really got me into Metal. Wild Child's guitare riffs made the death growls enjoyable and I began to like them. This was around the same time that I purchased the Blackwater Park album. Anyways, sometime around July 2002, I was at BestBuy one day looking through the music and noticed Opeth BWP Special Edition on sale for $11.99 and I figured that I would give it another try by listening to the whole album; if I didnt like it then I could resell it for more on eBay. I listened to it and became hooked on the classical, gentle sections of the music, including Harvest, The Drappery Falls, and Patterns in the Ivy. After listening to it a few times I began to enjoy the growls and heavy sections. From then on, my love for Black and Death Metal took off. I am simply fascinated with Mikael Akerfeldt. I get everything that he is associated with and I enjoy it all, thoroughly, including, Katatonia, Edge of Sanity, and Porcupine Tree. Morningrise has been my favorite album since October/November 2002. Of course, I listen to non-Opethian related music. :)

I voted for Still Life--love the story, great musicianship on that album.

I first got into Opeth about a year ago kinda randomly after hearing about Soilwork (Mikael features on the song A Predator's Portrait). Here I am now, and they are my favorite band.

I first got into metal way back in the fourth grade--a friend of mine loved Metallica, and gave me Ride The Lightning as a gift. Fade To Black is still my all time favorite song. (I'm 20 now, so that's about 11 years of being a metalhead) :headbang:

Shame on youuuu!!!

@TakinTheMusicBack > You must buy Orchid, it's as great as the others !!! :hotjump:

Oh I definetely will it's just that I dont see any point in buying all Opeths albums and trying to get into them in one go - I think you have to listen to each album for at least a month before you "get" it, so I'll get Orchid within the next month or so once I've totally digested Morningrise.

I'm surprised that BWP is winning so far as I've read quite a few posts from people here saying they dont like it.
And it's also apparent that most people here only discovered Opeth within the past year or two, even if they've been a metal fan for a lot longer like me. To me that means Opeth should get a new manager and get some more promotion done!! Too many metal fans dont know how great Opeth are.

1. I got into Opeth around 6 years ago with the My Arms, Your Hearse Album (April Ethereal)

2. I got into metal around 8 years ago with Master of Puppets from Metallica.

3. I got into music from Nevermind from Nirvana (HAHA!)

fave album: still life closely fellowed by all the others except morningrise which i never heard

got into opeth with blackwater park, shortly after it was released

got into metal in 98 i think, with something wicked this way comes...i hope 98 is right, was SWTWC even released then? time flies!

I voted for Morningrise.

I got into Opeth in late 1999, when I was in a chatbox and they were talking about Opeth, so I just went and downloaded Black Rose Immortal, because they told me it was amazing, and it was.

My neighbour gave me an album called ...And justice for all back in 1994...

My Arms, Your Hearse

1) I got into Opeth about 2 years ago after a friend gave me a copy of his Still Life CD to burn for one of his friends. I was the only person he knew who had a CD burner at the time. I listened to it, but didn't think much of it at the time. I kept a copy for myself anyways just in case I ever wanted to go back and listen to it again. About 3 months later that was all I was listening to.

2) I was a late bloomer for metal. I got into metal after I heard a friend listening to Metallica back in 96. I went out and bought that CD for the hell of it (black album, I think...don't remember) and listened to it a lot. It wasnt until about 2 years ago that I went and saw a radio show with Megadeth and Iced Earth that I fell in love with the REAL metal. I bought all the Iced Earth CD's after that (we even got to hang out with them for most of the day!). After that it was a matter of time before all the bands I know and love today came into my CD collection (Opeth, In Flames, Nevermore, Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, etc).
