I am desperate for new stuff to listen to. I bought the new Porcupine Tree album, and am lukewarm, leaning towards a shrugging dislike on it. Anything else, in any genre, you guys feel is worth writing home about?

These are the albums I really dug that were released in 2002. No particular order except for the top.

Immolation - Unholy Cult (death)
Rudy Adrian - Starfields Sequencer Sketches vol. 3 (electronic)
35007 - Liquid (stoner/psychedelic)
Richard Pinhas - Event and Repetition (electronic)
Azigza - X to Y (EP) (world music/progressive rock)
Kenso - Fabulis Mirabilibus de Bombycosi Scriptis (progressive rock/fusion)
Samla Mammas Manna - Dear Mamma (avant rock)
Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines (death metal)
Grand Magus - Grand Magus (retro hard rock/stoner)
Vir Unis & Saul Stokes - Thermal Transfer (electronic)
Cephalic Carnage - Lucid Interval (progressive grind/death)
Cephalic Carnage - Halls of Amenti (doom)
Shalabi Effect - The Trial of St-Orange (improv/psychedelic)
Harakiri - Twilight of the Idols (death metal)
Sotos - Platypus (avant rock)
Steve Roach - All Is Now (electronic)
The Allman Brothers Band - American University, Washington, D.C. 12/13/70
Grateful Dead - Steppin' Out with the Grateful Dead England '72
Out of Focus - Rat Roads (krautrock)

a few recent records of note:

Steve Von Till - If I should fall...
Iron & Wine - the creek drank the cradle
woven hand - s/t
16 horsepower - folklore

qotsa is good. so is interpol.

dredg is the most amazing band ever. everyone who hears them likes them imediately. i just let my friend listen to them a few days ago and he bought the cd the next day. "el cielo" is one of the best cds i've ever bought. and their first one "leitmotif" is almost as good.
for some reason, they remind me a little of motw, only lighter. kind of like just the mellow, non-metal parts of motw.

Oh, and Sigil, you like the new Nile album? I think their new drummer is a dissapointment after the looming tightness of the old one. I was very dissapointed by the sloppier approach to the music.

Speaking of which, what happened to Doc from Vader? The drumming on the new one is so (relatively) lackluster. I don't really care for that band, but Doc is hot shit and I buy their stuff just to hear him play. Motherfucker doesn't use his wrists and *still* hits with power. Fucks me up.

Symphony X- The Odyssey- This is freakin great.. I dont know if anyone around here digs them.. but they kill
Origin- III- The whole band is pretty much insane
and not to suck up but...
Maudlin of the well- Bath/LYBM- seriously made me rethink the way I listen to/play music..

Cant wait for Katatonia's new one, and the lighter Opeth album.
