Let me start out again by saying I'm not a guitar player. :)

So my guitarist is going to get a new head and cab for christmas, and we're trying to decide which one to get?

What are you guys' suggestions for the best metal tone?

Price range up to about $1000.

Thanks guys!

Now thats a really general question.
What kind of metal does he play?Band references etc?
The 1000$ are for the head only or both?
Were is he going to use them?Home?Live?
Is he going to record with this setup?

Sorry i wasn't specific enough. :(

Band references:

For The Fallen Dreams
The Ghost Inside
Etc..

We're going to be using it live, and possibly for recording. But the first priority is for live use.

$1000 for the head.

Let me get this straight for myself; I know 5150 was originally made in collaboration with Van Halen, and when this said collaboration came to an end, they changed its name to 6505. Right? So I'd like to know, are there any real differences between a 5150 and a 6505? Why is everyone recommending a 5150 and not a 6505?

Thanks for all the replies.

I just found a slightly used 5150 on eBay for $455. :)

I'm pretty confident he'll go for this one.

He was considering a Bugera or maybe a B52.
Anything that I can say to convince him otherwise?

And also, what's a good cab that suits the 5150?

Mesa 2x12 would definitely be the best cab IMO (vertical ideally, cuz it's easier to hear them live as they're of course higher up, though they're harder to find used)
