So my band wants to get some really nice live drums on an EP that we're working on right now but I can't decide if I should just buy mics and do it myself or rent a studio for a day to get the drums.

I've been trying to get in touch with a certain studio (Warrior Sound) but they are pretty hard to get in touch with.

Can anyone recommend some place that would be more valuable than just buying mics and doing it myself?

yea...if there's any part of the process that's worth paying for, it's tracking drums and mixing

pay the day rate on a good room with some nice gear and a pro engineer and make it worth it

Totally agree. For good drum sounds you need someone with plenty of experience. You can buy the mics but you can't buy the experience.

Yeah this is sort of what I'm leaning towards. I have a TON of experience with programmed drums but have only done a few projects with actual live drums. Our drummer has a sort of style that doesn't translate well in a programmed situation anyway.

SBWAKFK1,

Anyone you wanna recommend?

Jacob Veal that posts here is always looking for work in the Nashville/Chattanooga/Knoxville area.

There is also this guy in Knoxville, but I don't know his drum tracking situation. He seems like he's into rock/metal.

There is a good looking live room at Chattanooga's Breaker 17 studio.

My pal Charles Allison of SPANNER SOUND doesn't have a huge room and isn't into metal, but he's a super cool guy and gets good results:

Hell, if you want cheap, I'll do it here at my mom's house! Literally right on Hwy 411.

Sloan, I may actually send you a message

The Castle (which has a SSL 4000 and a SHITLOAD of great gear)

Sound Emporium studio B

Playground Studios

Catch This Music (stupid name but good place)
http://catchthismusic.com
All of which are reasonably priced. None of them will include an engineer unless you specifically ask. Let me know if you need more, I have tons of contacts and could find you a great deal.
BTW....Blackbird is amazing but you'll pay a lot for it.

And take Sloan with you

I would be totally down to document a Black Bird adventure!

I've got some clips on my facebook page under 'discography'. I think my favorite natural kit i've recorded was on the Uncle Touchy stuff.

There is a phone number listed on that page too. It forwards to my cellphone, but I most likely won't answer so you can just leave a message. Text also works as well.

I am about an 1.5hr drive from Knoxville and closest to the Charleston, TN exit.

Warrior Sound in Chapel Hill? Al's my boy I can put in a word if you want.
If you just want a studio for drums I'd look at Echo Mountain in Asheville too. That's where soilwork did the Panic Broadcast.
