For heavy, distorted guitars. I already have a decent tone, just wondering what everyone out there is doing? Just the order of plugs, and whats your favorite compressor, eq, etc for the job!

:goggly:

i use eq like forbidden said, but I also use the vintage warmer comp and harmonic exciser in ozone.

Reaeq on the guitar tracks (to cut fizz and awkward frequencies as I use a pod)
Guitar buss gets ozone harmonic exciter
Reaeq with a hipass of 60hz and a lowpass of 12khz
reaxcomp if needed to tame the lows
stereo widener
and then W1 limiter

at least that is the chain I'm using on the current band I'm recording :p

sonnox eq for filter and cuts, and 1073 for any sweetning boosts,
La2a on clean guitar

electric-q for cuts, HP/LP. Then bus L & R and put modern analoger, tessla SE, Tessla Pro and BootsyEQ MKII for some adjustments and then, bus the guitars again to a "room track" using buzzroom or SIR with a bricasti M7 IR. Basically that. Clean guitars: depends on wehat i want to achieve (effect wise I mean). I always tend to use TbT Tug of War compressor before the amp sim (usually Rednef Twin or SoloC with DigitalMan Fender Super Champ IRs). EQs are the same for cleans and heavy guitars. :)

thanks guys for all the advice! and yes i know alot of people don't use much at all except filters! but sometimes when your guitarists don't have the nicest amps to record with you gotta give them a little push ;].

I try and keep my plug-in chain as simple as possible for guitar.

TSS
Amp Sim
keFIR (more so than boogex recently)
output rhythm guitars to a group track
Hi-pass and lo-pass then usually a surgical cut at 100hz then i try to keep the rest of the tone all in the amp.

I use the Waves Q8 or Q10 or whatever to cut out some nasty frequencies, surgical style, then API-550B over the gat bus as well as playing around with limiting/compressing/etc - just to see what sounds best. Again - if you get the source right, and mic it up well, you wont need to worry about too much in the plug in section.

Hey guys, Im a beginner so please dont lite me on fire for this... but could someone show me a screen shot of what an Eq looks like doing a Hp/Lp ? Ive been reading/searching/learning about Eq'ing and Im lost, every attempt at it ends up making it sound worse. Im not even sure a Hp/Lp is even what I need, I would just like to remove some Fizz from the guitars.

Nothing wrong with beginner questions, although Google in this case probably could have answered your question more quickly than waiting for someone else to take their time and write you a personal response!

If you want to remove fizz from a guitar tone, then a low pass is likely what will need (you are letting the low frequencies pass, and filtering away the high frequencies where the fizz hangs out). This is an example of a low pass:

A high pass is the same as a low cut, and likewise a low pass is the same as a high cut. It just depends on how each particular company wants to label their product.

Lowpass at 80 Hz
Highpass at 10.000 Hz

I tend to hover around:

Sonnox EQ
C4 Multiband
L2 Limiter

When things are really brutal I'll get an instance or two of Curve EQ in there.

PS. LOL nice piracy shot above. I nearly kakked myself when I saw it.
