Best release by an 80s band... from this past decade?

I was listening to Megadeth's United Abominations yesterday. I think it just may be the finest release of this last decade (2000 - 2009), by a band from the 80s.

So... if you had to pick one release from this past decade (2000 - 2009), by a band whose debut was released during the 1980s, which release would it be?

Here are the ones jumping to mind......

Extreme - Saudades de Rock
Lillian Axe - Waters Rising
Ratt - Infestation
Iron Maiden - Brave New World
Motley Crue - Saints of Los Angeles

The important thing I'd add is that while all of these discs are REALLY good, I wouldn't say ANY of them are outright gems. No one has COMPLETELY recreated the magic of the 80's / early 90's, although in the last couple of years the bar has been raised considerably again. 2009 and 2010 have both been resurgent for the hair metal bands, with several solid releases (Whitesnake, Extreme, Crue, even the last Def Lep had its moments).

Edit: After seeing the "PICK ONE" line....... I think I go with Lillian Axe, as they have always been a personal favorite.

Tough choice between a few. But just to choose one, I'll go with:

Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

Jag Panzer - Mechanized Warfare quickly comes to mind.

Zod - Sorry, but I am going to have to strongly disagree with you about United Abominations. There is WAY too much filler on there. I think it's their best release since Cryptic Writings, but that isn't saying much considering its competition is RISK, WORLD NEEDS A HERO, and SYSTEM HAS FAILED.

One of the most interesting forum questions I've seen in a while here...

I'm going to have to think about this one for a little bit.

Interesting. I absolutely love the Crue. And while I think the title track is as good as anything they've ever written, there's not another track on this disc I can even get through. I actually much prefer New Tattoo.

Actually just listened to "New Tattoo" a month back or so. I like the single off the album, but found the rest forgettable. On "Saints", I also think "Animal in Me", "Down at the Whiskey", "Love Song", and "What's It Gonna Take" are all great tunes, with "Animal" being my fave on the entire disc.....

I still think "Risk" gets a bum rap. I thoroughly enjoy that album. However, I was a "late" convert to Megadeth, as it took me a LONG time to get over Dave's vocal style. "44 Minutes" off the new album may be their best song since "Trust", however....

Great topic, by the way!!!

Fates Warning - FWX :)

Heaven and Hell - The Devil You Know (assuming you're not too picky about this being the same band)

Candlemass - Death Magic Doom \m/

I'm sure one of the Bad Religion albums from this decade are pretty sweet but I actually have not heard any of the ones after The New America (which I liked).

Haha, OK, if I have to pick one, I go with Heaven & Hell.

I'd have to think a little harder, but the ONE that immediately comes to mind is Jag Panzer's "Thane to the Throne" (2000). If allowed to choose a runner up I'd probably go with Helloween's Gambling With the Devil (2007). Freaking LOVED that album!

I said, "picky" ;) I know a lot of people would consider a year like 1970, 1980 (years ending in zero) to actually be the last year of the previous decade. So 2000 might be considered the last year of the 90s, not the first year of the noughts. So if you think this way, the Ronnie-fronted version of Sabbath would not have debuted in the 80s but rather the 70s, which would disqualify them (it would also cause Ozzy-fronted Sabbath to have debuted in the 60s). In this case, I would go with Fates FWX. I thought of a few band candidates who debuted with one album in like 88 or 89, but I wanted to try and pick a band that was firmly established in the 80s and are still going today, albeit not intensively.

EDIT - yeah Helloween turned in a great comeback with Gambling! That's a good choice. Also, Overkill w/ Ironbound.

You know, for whatever reason, I don't think Ive really ever spend much time with those discs. Thanks for the tip... I'll revisit.

I knew this would happen... I'd forget about an 80s band. Jag Panzer completely slipped my mind. I will have to reconsider where I'd position Casting the Stones.

My choice is by a band that was formed in the 60's and had releases in the 60's 70's 80's and 90's.

Their 1994 release is one of my all time favorites. And this band is:::::

Pink Floyd - The Division Bell

Zod - Seriously, don't even waste your time with those three 'Deth releases. RISK has a couple tolerable tunes. World Needs a Hero is as uninspired as St Anger.

Casting the Stones gives Mechanized Warfare a good run for its money. Thane to the Throne is indeed solid as well, but I personally prefer CTS and MW.

Forgot about Helloween's Gambling. That was solid too.

Im gonna have to go with either Crue's SOLA, Ratt's Infestation, Dokken's Lightning Strikes Again, or Maiden's Brave New World.

But there are a ton more...
