I've got some extra cash and I've been looking at Fenders... leaning towards a telecaster I guess. Do you guys have any experience on which sounds best with more gain?

what sort of music are you doing?
I'm a total tale fanatic....

Also check out the Jaguar and ESPECIALLY the Jazzmaster... It's like a REALLY pissed off tele.

Try the Jim Adkins Tele.

I do a lot of stuff but this guitar will not be for metal. This will be for modern rock... I'd like to a single coil guitar with lots of mids.

That natural Jim Adkins Tele looks stunning!!!! Dude... I might get that one but I hope I can try it before buying.

you say it's not for metal, but just velo away from strats, those middle coil pjcjkps get in the way big time!

also jazzmaster's can't handle any force cars the strings just hang in there via a groove in the bridge. iirc.

get a telecaster!

less so on the new ones.

HUGE Tele addict here.

The Jim Adkins Tele is not a Tele. It's just shaped like one and happens to say "Telecaster" on it - the body wood, construction, pickups, electronics, and bridge are all different from a traditional Tele design. You NEED a maple neck if you want the "Tele" sound. The Adkins Tele is more like a hybrid of a Les Paul Junior and a Tele Deluxe (which also doesn't sound like a traditional Tele).

I've been REALLY impressed with Fender's American offerings lately. I just played an American Special Tele and it was flat-out excellent, especially considering the price. I also recently tracked a guitarist who was using an American Deluxe Tele and it sounded like a damn piano. HUGE tone.

As always, go to some stores and play a few, pick your favorite.

I've owned two teles before. One was a Tokai with Duncan pickups. I really loved the sound but the neck was just unplayably thick. Then I had a 72 Deluxe MIM. I had to switch the pots to get a usable tone and then it was okay. I'm not sure why I sold it though... :D I needed cash then and now I could buy like... well multiple 72s new.

Anyways here's a clip from two years back. No I wasn't 13 years old two years ago, I just look that way. I'm working on a stache to make me look older. :D

So... are there slimmer necks on some teles and do they still have the tele sound?

whatever you do, get one with a maple fretboard ;)
I enjoyed the Yamaha Mike Stern, but I've never tried it for rock stuff, more clean and blues,
and I liked the Road Worn Tele alot, friend of mine owns one, plays stoner rock with it most
of the time.
G&Ls are really nice, too, played one with a bareknuckle in the bridge, no clue which model,
but it was great :D

i dont know what your budget is, but if it happens to be cheap, go for the new Classic Vibe series of Tele's. i recently picked up a thinline classic vibe for about 350$, and for what its worth, the guitar is AMAZING. probably the best (lower budget) single coil guitar on the market.

Tele Deluxe (the ones with the Wide Range pickups) scream modern rock for me. OK, they aren't single coils, but they also aren't humbuckers. They sound way more open sounding than humbuckers, less compression, etc..Cool guitars! A friend bought a B-stock one off Ebay for $350 and it plays like a dream

Haha.. thanks for the compliments.

I don't have a clear budget in mind. Basically I can buy any guitar I want but ofcourse I'm not spending a lot of money on something I don't really want. I used to have one of those Deluxe Teles and after the tone pot switch it was a very cool sounding guitar. Before that I couldn't get anything usable out of it. In the end it sounded like a slightly brighter version of my PRS guitars and I always chose my PRS guitars over it. So I guess I just want something very different. I was actually thinking about a simple pickup switch on one of my PRS guitars but that's a rule I've sworn not to break. :D

But hey, thanks for all the input!

Have you checked out the Suhr model range ? Can't find anyone who has a bad thing to say about these guitars .

Can you elaborate on the tone pot switch?

Sure! Stock pots in these new Deluxes are 250k pots. It's an extremely common mod to change all pots to 500k pots. F.ex. Les Pauls have 500k pots. Before I did the mod I never used any other pickup position but bridge. I mean... it was just low end mumble with both my Rectifier and most Axe-Fx amp sims. If you still own that guitar I highly recommend you try this mod... It'll cost like $30 and you'll get a guitar that's a lot more open sounding. A completely different instrumnt if you ask me. I used it on this record: http://www.underfield.com/

Funny coincidence! Someone's selling a Suhr Classic T in the city I live in. I'll try it out and see if I like it or not. Hype mythbuster mode activate! :tickled:

Report back if you do try it out , I am after a tele at the moment but have never played any Suhr guitars .
Going to take a trip to a dealer with a good stock to find out if they are as good as people say .
