I'm looking for new portable speakers to replace my Philips DS8500/05 (which I considered good, but I had them for so long that could just have gotten used to the sound).
So far, my best options are the JBL Charge 2+ (or are the charge 3 better?), the Bose Soundlink mini 2 and the JAM HX-P920 Heavy Metal.
Most reviewers use pop songs as a reference but I'd like to know how they fare with metal. Any suggestions?

It kind of depends, the portable bluetooth speaker market is quite big and offers a lot of products with their own pros/cons. Are you going to use this on the beach or somewhere rugged, or does waterproofing and durability not matter as much? Obviously bigger speakers will get louder (some similar size models get louder than others as well), but they are also less portable (the ones you listed are more in the mid-size category). Also price should be another consideration, as the Bose units all tend to be somewhat pricier.

I personally have experience with a few of them, and so far I think the Soundlink Mini II sounds pretty damn good with metal. A lot of the other ones seemed to have scooped mids and boomy bass in comparison, but the Bose has some pretty exceptional SQ for its size. From what I remember, the JBL seemed to have a sound signature that caters more to the pop, hip-hop, and electronic music crowd. I havent actually heard the JAM Heavy Metal, but from what ive seen it seems to be more in line with what you would hear from the Bose SQ-wise, gets louder, and is significantly cheaper.

My suggestion is that if you arent looking for a rugged speaker (go for the JBL Charge 3 in that case), I would go for either the Bose or the JAM.
