i dunno if i really intended it to be "true" dm vs "true" bm....erm maybe i did say that ...but, well, there are a few characteristics shared by bands of each genre amongst themselves, i.e. black metal has lots of blastbeats, shrieking, tremolo picking, etc. the question is more which type of general characteristics are you more attracted to. there are a lot of bands that don't really fit comfortably into either (or any) genre, like opeth...so disregard those for a moment i suppose.

In my opinion, these kinds of bands are the bands who are pushing the creative boundaries of Metal right now. They are incorporating symphonic (and to a limit operatic) influences into their music,

Listen to fuckin' Pain of Salvation. Their most recent album got totally shitty reviews because there were like 80 styles packed into 12 songs. And if you masturbate over progress then PoS is totally your thing.
