Bob Rob Interview - Funny Shit

J the TyranT said:
No... fuck the lovefest for Alternica... evolving is what bands like Samael, Anathema, Soilwork, Tiamat and Amorphis have done.

Metallica just fucked up, dropped the ball, and they all need to exit and get the fuck away from the music scene forever and just leave it at that.

The world never needed Metallica.. Im not gonna kiss their asses for "giving birth" to anything. If they didnt do it, someone else would've... Anthrax, Slayer, Exodus, `deth and the like were certainly around putting boots in peoples' asses just the same. So yeah, great.. they're the ones who were there when the sun and the stars aligned... and yeah, they made some good tunes and helped to fly the flag and put metal albums in the homes of the suburban youth for a decade... but now their time has come and they need to squarely fuck off.

I was PRETTY SURE I remember hearing something along the lines of Bob Rock telling him something along the lines of "i can make you guys millionaires", but, that could be rumor... so, either way.

Give respect where its due and when its earned... put throw it by the wayside when its abused, too. Revlon had a lipstick color dubbed red metallica... note HAD, before the "metal icons" filed suit. $$$$$$$$$ runs the game, I guess.

And dont lie and pretend that none of us would just love the $$$. Fuck, if I could make all the $$$ doing what I love to do, than that's just great... but Im not going to get lost and caught up in the pursuit of -literally- greener pastures in the meantime. There's a million arguments out there why they turned out some shitty records, or why all the lawsuits came, or why their internal turmoil bubbled over... but in the long run.. fuck them, their time in the spotlight is over... and they need to exit (stage right) and just forget it already.

I have Metallica albums, had their t-shirts... so I am/was a fan... I just dont think we owe a fucking thing to them like they led some kinda fucking revolution, cuz that's just as much a buncha ridiculousness as saying they didnt do anything either.

Anyways, enough ranting.. Metallica rocked, and now they're gone... kinda like the Roman empire... cya.

Wow! This is a good one. Before I dissect the living hell out of this post, let me make one thing clear to you guys who are maybe a little younger than some of us. If you truly love real fucking heavy metal, by default, you are in debt to Metallica. That's a fact.

I never said (don't think anyone else did, either) that Metallica was "evolving". I said that they're trying to be different - albeit with mixed reviews on the results.

As for Metallica needing to exit the music scene or whatever, there are MILLIONS AND MILLIONS more people that disagree with your sentiments than agree. I think that it's a little arrogant to tell a musician to stop playing because YOU don't like it. The Rolling Stones heard the same shit and guess what - they just played the halftime show at the Super Bowl 40+ years into their career! I say as long as you love to play, do it.

"The world never needed Metallica". Another arrogant statement. I don't know about you, but I can't imagine a world without the riff(s) from

Seek And Destroy
Jump In The Fire
Whiplash
No Remorse
Creeping Death
Fade To Black
Trapped Under Ice
Battery
Master Of Puppets
Damage Inc.
Sanitarium
Blackened
One

The list goes on...

Anthrax, Exodus, Megadeth, and to some extent, Slayer... all those bands existed because of Metallica. They single handedly opened the gates for metal in the glorious '80's and exposed a vibrant scene in the Bay Area that created aftershocks (pun intended) that would last well into the 90's. THEY were the chosen ones.

If Bob Rock did say that he could make them millionaires (which I highly doubt), what's so wrong with that? Believe it or not, money is mostly a GOOD thing.

"$$$$$$$$$ runs the game, I guess."

Actually, $$$$$$$$$ runs the world. $$$$$$$$$ built your house, your school, your library, your streets, your vehicle, your instruments..., EVERYTHING! You can also get really hot chicks when you have $$$$$$$$$. Don't be resentful of it, because we all want hot chicks... don't we? Money changes people - some for the better, some for the worse. It's easy to say how money will affect you until you get some.

Like I said, I don't listen to anything after "And Justice...". Mass-appeal never appealed to me, and I'm sure that you feel the same way. My wife has the Black album in her cd stash alongside Mariah Carey and Martina McBride. I don't hate them for going that route. I respect Metallica for their success as not only the best-selling metal band of all time, but one of the top-selling acts of all time PERIOD. You or me, or no one else can ever take that away from them.

Anywayz, nothing personal. I think that you're hurt more than anything.

Christ, if you could just pull the Hetfield dildo out of your ass, maybe that'd help out your ability to think rationally.

Metallica regurgitated shit from Diamondhead, Budgie, Killing Joke and the like -anyways-, so let's not give them this crown as kings of the scene.

Im quite sure your list of:

Seek And Destroy
Jump In The Fire
Whiplash
No Remorse
Creeping Death
Fade To Black
Trapped Under Ice
Battery
Master Of Puppets
Damage Inc.
Sanitarium
Blackened
One

Had you think about the amount of contribution made my Dave Mustaine and Cliff Burton somewhere in there... and where'd Metallica wind up without them? Oh yeah, the Black album. Dont say AJFA, cuz that shit was written when Cliff was still around.

People's opinions on the "music scene" are a fucking joke these days anyways. Ever hear of Ashlee Simpson? Yeah, she sells records too, and its not because she has an ounce of talent running through her entire body. Music isnt some "art form" anymore... lets not romanticize about someone picking up the guitar and showing their couse of emotions through their strings... that happens when [like someone else puts it] Gilmour picks up the axe and rolls away... not when Hammett wanks off some wah-heavy taps.

Im not indebted to those guys for shit... the ARROGANCE comes from the fact that them, and their nation of brainwashed knuckle-draggin hessian fans... all think that the REST of us, think we owe them a motherfucking thing...

And paint that any way you want to. If Arlen Ness didnt start customizing bikes, someone else would've. If Carroll Shelby didnt start tweaking cars, someone else would've. Etc etc etc.

There's a difference between being Mickey Mantle... who -owned- the baseball world.. and being Doubleday, who fucking invented it.

Metallica were another player in a legacy that existed before them, would've existed just fine without them, and will continue to exist long before they're no longer of this earth.

Boy, do I ever feel left out because of millions and millions of people disagreeing with me... then again, I dont listen to emo rock, have a trendy haircut, and I didnt vote for Bush... like THE MAJORITY DID...

Or, are you the majority here?

Check it out. ^^^

Well my opinion is relativly simple but regardless of politics, I think Metallica wrote some really great music, and it's what got me into metal and I personally (and a lot of my friends) will always thank them for that at least.

R.I.P. Cliff!

That'd be even odder.. then it'd be some kinda weirdo Christian band almost... lol, Mustaine's gotten a bit out there in recent times also.

Good ol Anthrax, Testament and Exodus are the remaining core...

I only omitted Slayer cuz Im not their biggest fan =P

While we're at it we should kick out Bob and replace him with Andy Sneap. At least that way all potential future snare problems will be alleviated :)

Either Andy Sneap or Matt Smith, since he really, truly UNDERSTANDS them as artists. Plus, Matt probably has the highest quality recording chairs... I haven't heard Andy's chairs miked up yet. I think Andy mostly uses "drums" or whatever. Pssh. :D

I think stick Kirk on Bass and get Mustaine back...what dya reckon...

I reckon there would be blood spilt before the end of the first rehearsal.

Imagine bass wah on every note of every song and re-think that for a moment. :)

St. Anger sucked *because* they spent a rediculous amount of time and money to make a record that was intended to sound like it was recorded live in a bad room on cheap gear. In a day. Drunk.

It's a poser record. It sounds like cheap gear but it's custom shop ESPs, hand-wired Mesas, and mics so nice I don't even know who makes them. It sounds rushed but they took years to make it. It sounds raw and ugly and drunken, but the band was in kum ba ya therapy sessions and off the sauce, talking about their feelings in a positive, open dialogue designed to be non-confrontational while still bringing about positive results and a feeling of closure.

This is what happens when a pop commodity tries to produce a metal record. It is poop.

I think they were trying to reestablish some cred but it blew up in their faces.

Guys do you have the bonus dvd that came with the cd?
Well I think that the dvd with them rehearsing the entire album sounded so better than the record!
And I think it's not so boring as listening to the entire record!
Besides all this shit It's great to see them playing live!
Too bad that the band is not that good anymore....

[the rest snipped for brevity]

This is probably the best answer I've seen on this board so far. I understand what they were trying to do with this album- they wanted a raw, gritty, under- or non-produced heavy record that sounded like four guys jamming live. This is a cool concept. It's not for every band or every album, but Metallica are/were in a position where they could experiment like that. Make it sound like four guys jamming, leave in the snares rattling, the bum note on the vocal track... that could be cool. That could work. But the material needs to be there to back it up. And it's not. It's overwrought, overdone, the vibe is fake, and the songs are as rough as the production. And the lack of lead work is silly. I'm not saying this as a guitar wanker who loves soloing, either (though I am a guitar wanker who loves soloing)- I'm saying it as someone who's familiar with Metallica's style. They don't exactly make the best use of two guitars I've ever heard, not on their heavier material. It's mostly doubled rhythms. That second guitar needs to be doing something interesting sometimes, otherwise, what's the point?

Just my thoughts...

Ya know, you all sound like my dad. The way he bitched about the music I was listening to (which happened to be Metallica by the way)....this is the same exact shit....Dad? Is that you? Sorry I havent called lately....

ITS FUCKING METAL!!! It should sound raw and ugly and nasty and drunken and (insert adjective here)
.....

Some of you obviously like your metal polished and pretty and nice and, umm, sober.........:hypno:
