Brutal/Slam Death Metal

I even have older CDs with just the text sometimes get stuck in my car player because they get too hot. There are ways of getting them out without damaging the player

Time to resurrect this sumbitch, because I don't want to clog up the regular DM thread with overly brutal shit everyone there will hate. I'veFirst off, I just bought this, which is the spiritual successor to Mindly Rotten's The Most Exquisite Agonies; it's purely chaotic, raw, spastic brutal death metal.

Encystment from Ecuador released a promo recently and I'd heard a bunch of people talking about it but didn't get around to hearing it until this past weekend.

Members of Perverted Dexterity and Dissevered recently formed this new project, called Urged, and released a demo.

Shockwave Extinction, featuring Hannes of Indecent Excision and Marc of Darkall Slaves, recently released this, which I was lucky enough to get at Las Vegas Deathfest, and now they signed to NSE, so I know that shit is gonna suddenly be expensive LOL

Batu of Cenotaph (TUR) is always a busy man, and managed to release this Molested Divinity album this year.

True TXDM seems to be making a comeback.

Outside of those few, some other bands that have put out (or are putting out) listenable releases this year are Arthropodal Humanicide, Bloodtruth, Biomorphic Engulfment (demo), Chalera, Contorted Mind, Injurious, Kakothanasy (promo), Posthuman Abomination, Raw, Reduced.

I've been dipping deep into brutal death metal lately. It's been a huge nostalgia trip for me as well because I've been mostly sticking to the bands I got into back in '05/'06 when I got into the style. I wish I never got rid of all my merch over the years when I got out of the style, especially wish I still had my Molesting the Decapitated longsleeve. :erk:

This promo is bonkers, loving every second of it. Brutal death metal must be the only subgenre keeping promos relevant and the content is actually worth hearing unlike most other shitty promos I listen to.

Vocalist is so fucking deranged man, jesus christ.

Sci-fi technical/brutal death metal is my favourite thing right now. I like all the weird electronic effects they scatter throughout the songs, just some straight mind-bending shit. Is this another promo? I can only imagine how many of these cardboard sleeve CDs you have by now dude.

I've been basically ignoring newer brutal death and listening to old shit, for inspirational purposes. The majority of what I've been playing is 90s demos, shit that's kinda...."almost brutal death metal", ya know what I mean? BDM way before it was ever really a thing, and without being slam. Outside of that, here's a few albums I've really been digging into for the kind of inspiration I've been looking for.

I'm kinda pissed about that Encystment promo, I ordered one ages ago and still never got it. I know shipping from Ecuador is a bitch, but damn. Otherwise a sick release. You may also dig Excoriation from Russia, they have the same vocalist, but Excoriation also has Paolo from Putridity and Devangelic on backup vocals, makes for a really sick effect!

Yeah that SE is a promo too, I'll be stoked when they do a full length. You'd kinda be surprised, I actually rarely give a fuck about promos. The scene fucking super-flooded with bands that just shit out promos and EPs for no reason, so I usually just wait for full lengths unless I get promos for free with orders or something. Just make a fucking full length, stop jacking everyone off with a promo so you can make a quick buck.

I have no idea what the profit margin is for making promos and shipping them out, but I could see how too many would get annoying. Especially if the bands never follow them up with studio material for years and years. That would piss me off.

Of those links I don't think I've ever heard Putrilage, the rest are sick though. I'll check out Excoriation, cheers. Looking forward to hearing what all this inspiration is culminating in by the way, going to be sick!

Lately I've been revisiting Vomitory's shit, love those guys up to a certain point.

I listened to some of this stuff on this page, and honestly I find it completely alienating, especially the Slam. What am I missing?

The Putrilage and Mutilated were okay, but they didn’t sound particularly “brutal” either. I’ve heard standard death metal I find to be more brutal. So I don’t really understand the genre tag either, or what the defining features are.

Stuff like Wormed and Devourment I just can’t even begin to understand. I guess I get the appeal of it but it still makes no sense to me. It’s all just a dense mass of indiscernible riffing and hyper blasting to me. And do they all have that tin can drum sound?

It's hard to "get" something unless you listen to it consistently, this is why all black metal sounds tinny and samey to people who don't listen to black metal. Weird that you aren't self-aware enough to understand this considering just the other day you got upset that Slammed was shitting on black metal.

I don’t think that’s fair, because Slammed’s comment was more inflammatory than I am trying to be here. Which I’m not trying to be at all.

Over the years I have seen numerous opinions that Molesting the Decapitated is the only good slam death metal album or is at least way above everything else in the genre. I’ve tried a few slam bands myself and I honestly don’t see enough difference in sound for why people think this. But yeah, you’re correct, I’d just need to spend more time listening to it.

This is an example of what I mean:
“Devourment did in 1999, what no one else could do for the style. The album is perfect in its design and intent. The instruments are unique and the structures of the songs were well elaborated by the band. I think the style is kind of bizarre, to be honest, and i even tried to venture myself into some slam bands earlier this year, but I found it all very ridiculous. But "Molesting the Decapitated" may be the best and only record of the genre that i love to listen to.”

You are asking others to explain why a genre you think is not brutal, has tin can drums, makes no sense to you, is completely alienating to you and sounds like a dense mass of indiscernible riffing and hyper blasting, is not all of these things. That's pretty insufferable to me, to completely shit on and reduce a style to something, while also asking for help to understand it. If you didn't intend it that way, fair enough of course.

Obviously we have to listen to a lot in a genre before we can even begin to isolate the best bands from the worst.

Imagine trying to explain to someone who doesn't like black metal why a canonical black metal masterpiece is what it is.

We need to revive this thread, recommend me some of your favourites Ozzman.

I am not as well versed in BDM or Slam as morguelord, but anything from New Standard Elite label is solid:

Inherit Disease (drummer owns and runs NSE)
Cerebral Effusion
Abnormal Inhumane
Carnal (only have a demo thus far)
Disentomb

Yeah just go away. Don't bother trying to learn about it, just give up. Brutal death metal isn't just "not for everyone", it's "for fucking hardly anyone" and that's the way it should stay. I gave up trying to understand the boring dogshit genre that is black metal years ago, and I'm 1000% comfortable just hating the shit out of it. I'm honestly just tired of constantly having to explain what brutal death is to people that are never going to like it anyway, so just quit.
