know what's wrong with nationalism? when the country kills its citizens in the name of the country. then, when there are no citizens left, the country (as you say a living breathing being) says "oh shit." what kind of nation prides itself in being more important than its citizens? there is no nation without its people, and you know this. the structures of government should serve the people, not the other way around.
besides... what you hold so dear IS multiculturalism. the united states has no culture but pop culture in this current age. other nations' ideals of "nationalism" are based on their traditions and heritage: which, by the way, are also multicultural.
in case you didn't realize infoterror, every civilization that currently exists is a combination of civilizations that previously existed or still do. there is no "pure" culture.
