Northern Chicago Burbs
Yeah, I know they've been discussed here before, but I'm extremely late to the party. I ordered the Essential Doom collection from The End and have been listening to it over the past week. It's a recent greatest hits disc through most of their classic albums, not including any of their recent albums. I figured this would be a good place to start as an introduction to the band, and it only cost $9.00 on clearance and it had a bonus DVD with a 5-song live performance.

I really like this stuff, especialy something like Dark Reflections, which is much faster and catchier than any of the other songs. I have to admit that I was hoping that The Well of Souls was about Raiders of the Lost Ark, since that is what immediately comes to mind when I hear that phrase.

Just thought I'd let you know that I'm slowly getting on board the Candlemass/doom train. :)

Welcome!! Better late than never!
Too bad you weren't into them sooner, as they toured this year. First time in the States in 17 years. Given the piss poor turnout, I don't expect a return anytime soon, though maybe if they get offered a package tour or something.

Are you into Solitude Aeturnus at all?
If so, I highly recommend their latest, with Rob Lowe on vocals. It is quite stellar.

Also EPICUS DOOMICUS METALICUS is essential metal listening, for ANY metal fan.

Really? I'll have to re-read the lyrics. This compilation didn't come with anything other than a goofy poster of the band that looked pretty 80's to me. I glanced at the lyics to Well of Souls online and it seemed more satanic to me than anything else.

I have too many albums that I want right now to go through and buy the prior catalog, and this seems to be a decent hits package for now. If I keep getting into the band even further, I'll probably get the last few albums.

If I were a cartoon artist, I would totally create a mythical comic entitled DOOMICUS! He would rule the wasteland with his deadly smoke, which would be the result of his massive bong hits. His weapon would be a Gibson SG. He would be the REAL Iron Man!!!!!!!

One more thing Rycher.....
I assume by now you know how to Doom Dance?
If not, take some pointers from my main man Messiah:

Took what Black Sabbath and Trouble were doing and "ramped" the musical structure up. One of the best bands and certainly were successful at what they did with-"Epicus Doomicus Metalicus."

Good point, Jasonic. Take the guitar work from Masters of Reality, it was deliberate and slow. Candlemass took that "blueprint" and I believe, did it the best, by stepping the music up, or taking the music to the next level in what is referred to as Traditional doom. Also, Trouble layed out some good songs and riffs that were influential, especially on "Psalm 9."

I think Candlemass also had hints of Mercyful Fate, early Judas Priest, and Roth-era Scorpions mixed in there as well, but with a doom-ish groove and feel applied to it.

I always tell my power metal friends that Candlemass are a doom metal band that could be appreciated by trad / power metal fans, as their vocal melodies lean more that way. I mean, I think I have heard Messiah on numerous occasions claim Slayer to be his all time favorite band, so it makes sense that his vocal delivery does not mimic folks like Wino, for example.

Candlemass for me are the perfect mix, as my fav genres are trad doom, trad / epic metal, and power metal.

As the years have gone by, my musical tastes have somewhat shifted. I like and listen to any kind of music, as long as I feel it's done with integrity. For metal, it's become "extreme/doom with funeral attributes and trad/doom. Something about Esoteric, Mournful Congregation and Skepticism that touches me deeply. My imagination runs wild while listening to those bands. And bands like, Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus and Novembers Doom have something important to say to me. I'm now exploring Pantheist, a band that incorporates a mystical, mysterious and atmospheric feel. Has anyone heard the band EA and their album, EA-Ea Taesse? Go to lastfm for an utterly beautiful 18 minutes of "emotional" doom metal.

Revisiting this topic. Candlemass are at their best when they play faster. I just got the Lucifer Rising EP and the title track just rips, but then I get into the rerecording of Demons Gate and it's like "dudes! speed up!" I haven't really listened to the live stuff yet, but I'm definitely more into their faster songs.
