Candlemass

Revisiting this topic. Candlemass are at their best when they play faster. I just got the Lucifer Rising EP and the title track just rips, but then I get into the rerecording of Demons Gate and it's like "dudes! speed up!" I haven't really listened to the live stuff yet, but I'm definitely more into their faster songs.

naaaaah

I might like Rob's vocals better once he learns the classic material more.

Sorry - I know this was a touchy subject, but I am still a bit cross at Candlemass presenting the US a band who was fronted by a vocalist who spent (literally) 50% if not more of the time with his face down towards the lyric sheets.

Aside from that though, Lowe absolutley SLAYED on King of the Grey Islands.

I was a Candlemass fan LONG before I got into Solitude, so it would be hard for me to ever make a comment such as Lowe > Messiah.

Overall though, I am more than happy to have Lowe be Messiah's replacement. Lucifer Rising is killer as well.

The sad thing is after the piss poor turnouts they received on tour this year, I doubt they will be hitting the states again anytime soon.

If anything, they'll come back and do the Emperor and Immortal thing and play a show in NYC and a show in LA. Due to your show's shitty turnout, I doubt they'll throw Chicago in there. The NYC show was packed, so that may be a good possibility.

Rob's gotten better with the lyric sheets. Check YouTube for the latest live videos. Gotta cut him a break, though. He hasn't really had to memorize lyrics fulltime in FOREVER. The time gap between the last 2 SA CDs was ridiculously stupid.

oh, and I agree 100% with Pate's last post.

Well, a band like Candlemass who draws an older audience would have drawn a lot more in the city than at the Pearl Room.

Also, with as long as it has been since they have last been here, the tour's promoter should have gotten a more solid support band than Daylight Dies (no offense to DD though).

Maybe even a co-headlining tour with TROUBLE, or something like that, would have helped the draw substantially.

It was a crime that not even 100 people showed up to see them in Chicago.

It really did make a difference. Regardless of whether we here prefer Messiah or Rob, or enjoy both (as I do), I know of so many people who didn't go because of Messiah's absence. Even so though, Candlemass are just not that big of a draw in the U.S. in general. As already mentioned, certain places like NYC might fare better. But I mean, when Candlemass last toured the U.S. in their heyday, they played at the Avalon Nightclub, which could only hold a couple hundred people anyhow. So as much as I hate to admit it, they never really were that big of a draw.

Alot of the shows I've seen this past year at the Pearl Room haven't drawn spectacularly. I think the distance tends to deter some people, especially for those older groups like Candlemass, Possessed (another great show but not a huge draw), etc.

Green Carnation's touring woes is a whole 'nother can of worms that I ain't even gonna touch on  Those poor guys! What a fucking AMAZING live band they were too. A real shame....

Candlemass coming over strictly to do fests would make sense.....if only there were more U.S. metal fests for them to be a part of!!! All the fests here tend to be so specific in terms of what they'll book....."Death" fest, "Prog Power" fest, etc. I mean that's cool, I'm not knocking them. But we don't have any fest here that's even remotely comparable in size and scope to something like Graspop or Wacken or Metal Camp, and so on. That's why I like that Chicago Powerfest and Heathen Crusade have allowed themselves to be a bit more varied (especially in terms of Powerfest) when choosing bands and mixing up styles. But then I see alot of people bitching about that because they only want Power Metal or they only want Folk Metal, etc. *sigh*

yeah... Tchort or Kjetil mentioned some of the issues with touring and how they got screwed over. man oh man.

Whenever I get to see one of my favorite European or Scandinavian bands, I'm grateful. Who knows if we'd ever get to see them again? Bands like My Dying Bride, Vintersorg, Anathema, and Borknagar will never get to see this country again, because the people here suck. eh, whatever. I'll get my passport and go to them eventually.

Crazy thing is, all it would take is one promoter with the balls and the financial ability, to get any or all of those bands you mentioned over here to play even one show or fest. Hell, a metal fest with MDB, Anathema, Vintersorg, and Borknagar, with a few other choice support acts, would definitely draw well here. A whole tour like that? Maybe, but unsure. But definitely worthy for one fest. I think enough people would travel to see those bands together on one bill for one night.

I still think many bands who have drawn poorly in the past could have benefit from a combination of venue difference and touring package.

Daylight Dies as direct support for Candlemass was probably not the best choice.

A band like Candlemass has an older audience. That package needed another band, like a Trouble or Cathedral, to appeal to that crowd.

Granted, having another band on that package with a guarantee in the same ballpark as C'Mass may have bankrupted all involved in the long run as well, so who knows.

I would love to see MDB too.
I am sure it would cost a ton to bring over the entire band and personnel for a US appearance.
While we may all adore them here, its hard to judge how they would fair as a draw.

I am at a loss.

Kamelot this summer was packed to the gills, but Helloween (With Gamma Ray, which is a VERY strong co-headliner) drew VERY piss poor.

Kamelot are from the US, and Helloween and Gamma Ray are German. Maybe it's a promotion issue? Easier for Kamelot to start the pre-tour promotional buzz than bands 3000 miles away? Just a guess - I'm no expert in this area.

Cathedral doesn't draw well at all. When they opened for SYL in 2003 (2004?), the entire venue was the emptiest i've ever seen it... 2 rows of people up front. and that's around when SYL was drawing VERY well in Philly. combining the younger crowd for SYL and the fogies that like Cathedral, it was definitely surprising

YOU TOO WILL GET OLD SOMEDAY YOUNG MAN!!!

Sure, Cathedral isn't a huge draw, but combined with Candlemass, it might bring some older fans in who would be on the fence for seeing either band on their own.

Yeah. American Metal fans can be frustrating sometimes. So many are foaming at the mouth with passion right up until it comes time to get out there and show actual support. Well yeah they *do* have vacation time but taking a Thursday off then going in on Friday is so lame... oh they'd love to go see Amorphis but Samael are so weak... the show is upstairs and the acoustics there are so bad... beer costs $6.50... in Europe they were direct support to the headliners at festivals so seeing them play for 150 people is an insult... etc. etc. etc. It used to drive me barmy with Strapping Young Lad. Second they split, people began moaning about how there were never any gigs convenient enough and how lucky I was to have gone to 10 or 11. Mind you, out of those a good six were 300+ miles away and one detonated my transmission. In theory, we're all mighty warriors who will scale mountains made from the corpses of non-believers in the names of our great dark lords. In practice the only mountains I run across regularly are excuses to not drive to anything more than 15 minutes away and lists of really shitty tours that draw better than things I'd go see.

wow thats a load of blahblah? there aren't enough people going to the show, it's an insult! im not going either? doesn't that make you an accomplice to the insult?

i saw unexpect play for 25 people in november, 22 of which were looking bewildered and puzzled. now that was an insult! one of two best shows i saw in 2008 though, and that includes wacken :)
