what does Iron maiden fit under then
During the early 80's, Maiden was part of the "NWOBHM"; New Wave of British Heavy Metal - but this was more of a scene than a style of music. I don't think I've heard Maiden described as anything other than "heavy metal" in a strictly musical sense. They and Judas Priest pretty much defined what heavy metal was for a long time.

Genres are handy sometimes, but there are some bands that won't fit into any genre. Such as Slayer, Therion and Nightwish. Most of the time I think slapping a label onto such music is totally redundant. Such bands must be heard, not explained.

i think it's fair to say that iron maiden has some influence on melodic death metal. what am i saying? influence on all melodic metal. their album fear of the dark is quite celtic sounding. with this said, there needs to be some sort of breakdown of metal categories. you can only compare a band like hammerfall to band like cannibal corpse to a small limited sense. they both fit under heavy metal, but they're more opposite than they are alike. i think you people are arguing against breaking different metal genres in to sub-groups:

example:
death metal:
progressive death metal
melodic death metal
grindcore
and so on.

i can understand this, but what to do with those people who like only some of the sub-groups. a lot of death metal fans hate mortician and cannibal corpse, but love at the gates and kalmah. i would think everyone considers these bands death metal, but there is enough of a difference between these bands to categorize them differently.
