The fact that they're a completely unoriginal, trite mockery of classic power/trad metal, regurgitating the same subpar riffs and melodies over and over to the accompaniment of one of the most hideously shrill, weak, unlistenable vocalists in heavy metal. Their lyrics are cheesy, their lead work is uninspiring, and their vocal melodies make me want to shove forks into my eardrums to end the pain.

So yes, topic starter, I recommend avoiding Hammerfall at all costs. Get some Virgin Steele instead. Now THAT is power metal.

Seriously, I'm trying to dissuade people from listening to Hammerfall, because I believe never having to sit through a Hammerfall song will improve their lives.

All of their albums are awesome and I enjoy them all but if I had to chose one to start off with I would say Legacy of Kings. Awesome album with some great very heavy tracks including one of my favorites "Let The Hammer Fall". Also check out their lead singers new solo album. He goes by the name Cans and the album is called Beyond The Gates. It doesn't quite sound like Hammerfall but darker and even heavier. Features Mat Sinner from Primal Fear and Sinner and Metal Mike formerly of Halford now of Painmuseum on guitars.

I've heard it. It sounds great (except for the godawful ballads), but y'know, it could definitely use a different vocalist.
