Cheap but good monitors?

Have Rokit 8's. Hate em. you need to back off to your far wall to judge your low end, although I will say if you paid attention to your positioning you can get used to them pretty easy. I find there to be some acoustic hole in either the midrange or somewhere I can't place. Very flat, not in terms of frequency range. Save your cash up and get some quality monitors, your mixes will love you.

How do they compare to the KRKs? Looks like these are my only options..

I compared the Yamaha's with the KRKs in the store i bought em. The KRKs honestly sounded alot like my Behringer MS20 speakers. The KRK sounded pretty bassy with not much mids, just like my behringers. Tho the HS50's lack low end abit. But mixes on those always translated better to other stuff compared to the behringer's. If would choose again, i would go for something with a bigger speaker, probably the M-Audio BX8. Tho i dont know how they sound, Keith Merrow uses these, his stuff always sounds amazing, but ofc alot depends on your room, and the person who uses them.

Might be a little smaller than you're looking for, but I've got a pair of the Blue Sky eXo2 (2.1 system) and they work great. Small, unported, easy to control how much bass response you want with the built in sub level control. Got mine off of Ebay for $300 bucks, and combined with a crappy old pair of single driver speakers for mono checking/setting vocal levels they make a great setup. They run about $500 new; might be worth checking out.

The Yamaha HS series are great. Right now, I have the HS80Ms and the matching sub, but they are so large and loud that I just went ahead and ordered a set of HS50Ms too. I haven't used the HS50Ms yet, but I'm confident I'll like them. I will probably end up using the HS50Ms + sub most of the time and use the bigger HS80Ms when I can be louder or if I want to feel a little extra BOOM while tracking.

To me, they are easy to mix on (they translate well) AND they are pleasing to listen to... They definitely work for me way better than the Adam A7s I used to have.

Equator D5s are worth a shot. I got them and I am totally happy, if you are living in the states go for it. You can easily return them what I don't expect you will.
