im assuming you can use the imac as a display here

but why would anyone buy the cinema display over buying an imac

they're really close in price and with the imac you get a display and a computer!

I've never been able to fathom what it is about the cinema displays that makes them so goddamn expensive - I mean, $1800 for a fucking 30" LCD, you gotta be kidding me!

Different market. iMac 27 is for a semi-pro/home user and MacPro and Cinema Display is for a Pro user.
If you are in a studio (music or graphic) and you have already a MacPro you don't need an iMac 27 to put side by side I suppose...you need a monitor.
And anyway, I would buy a good Samsung instead a Cinema Display

A lot changed, IMHO, with the new line of iMacs. I was torn between getting a MacPro and using my old display (~2400e) or getting an 27" iMac (1700e). I ended up getting the iMac - it has an 2.66GHz i5 processor, FW800, an 1TB HD and it's super easy to add RAM up to 16GB. Plus for the price I got a fucking awesome display, so I really couldn't justify getting the MacPro.

If you don't need the PCI-E slots, I think the iMac is completely adequate for professional use. If you want to step up a notch, you can get an iMac with the i7 processor. Just check out some Geekbench results and compare them with the current line of MacPro's.

Yes I know, the new i7 iMac's are awesome and also the new i5's are perfect if you don't need PCIe.
I meant a Pro user that need PCIe cards (core cards, graphics accellerations, etc...)...if he need pci-e slots he need a macpro, but not an iMac to use as a monitor.

I really don't like how the iMacs have a sort of oddly shaped display. the picture is like 10% less in height than in normal displays. But I guess it isn't really a problem with the 27" ones.

16:9, dude :) I'm loving it, the resolution (2560x1440) makes me not want a second display for ProTools anymore

Sounds good man. I've only seen the much smaller iMacs in DAW use, and they weren't really cutting it. On a such large screen the 'movie' type of picture aspect sounds actually pretty cool.

i mean my logic here is getting the imac, using that as a display, then using the imac as a web computer / whatever else, and the mac pro that i hook the display up to during work for recording only

I like that logic Joey, go for it!

If one doesn't need the extra computer, a nice monitor can be had for CHEAP nowadays. I'd go for a Dell and I'm a Mac owner. I already have a nice LG though. I don't need uber special graphics for what I do, so a Dell would be fine for me.

Don't think that's possible...

Do you need a really good display for DAW use? I mean you don't have to get a Cinema Display, unless you're a graphics professional or something...

"look at me i am joey strugis i am buying 2 macs in 1 week. and protools hd, and the statue of david, and my own highway" Fuck you

:3

get the IMAC,
