Classic Albums

Yeah, dividing by region should produce much more cohesive genres than dividing by time period.

...So do you have anything resembling a first draft for this list?

no. will do at some point when I have more time. I won't be able to do much, I'm afraid - almost no knowledge of doom metal (I know Pentagram, Candlemass, and Trouble are supposed to kick ass and that's it), the NWOBHM, or obscure death and brutal death. But I can give a rough outline and other people can fill in what they've got.

Yeah, once we've agreed on how the list will be organised, all you really have to do is take people's input and add them to the list.

Right now I'm thinking the groupings would be something along these lines:

Early/Proto-Metal
NWOBHM-era
Heavy/Traditional (post-NWOBHM)
Glam
Thrash
Black (1st Wave)
Black (2nd Wave)
Black (2000s) - not really sure what the cutoff for 2nd Wave is myself
Black (Symphonic)
Death (Traditional)
Death (Brutal/Slam)
Death (Technical)
Power (American)
Power (European)
Progressive
Symphonic/Neoclassical
Folk
Avantgarde/Experimental
Gothic/Dark
Industrial
Melodic Death
Metalcore
Sludge
Stoner
Doom

Regions are gonna be US, Western Europe, Eastern Europe (germany, poland, etc), England, Scandinavia, as those are the general metal places.

basic template. probably missing a bunch of subgenres, feel free to add them in. Let's not do stuff like progressive melodic blackened deathgrind - pick the predominant genre and stick it in there.

Certain scenes should merit their own mention, like Swedish Death Metal, Finnish Death Metal, Czech Black Metal, German Thrash Metal, etc.

This is a good idea. I was thinking of starting a thread about underground metal classics that no one except people on boards like these have even heard of, but are generally considered awesome by people who have heard them.

...But I guess it could fit in this thread... It doesn't have to be famous to be a classic, does it?

I'm not gonna bother listing those I consider to be classic just yet, it'll just be a waste of time before we get some kind of structure on this.

regions are retarded except for what nec said, uspowermetal shit like that, not bands from random countries that qualify

Agreed. The scene should be just that; a group of bands who probably all knew each other who were comprising a homogeneous group of bands which played a variegated yet tight knit bunch of styles.

Eh. I think the styles are relevant because sometimes band from random countries will play in the US power metal style.

We can have both.
Or just the regional scenes. I just feel like that'll leave some bands out. Like Carcass - Heartwork was an important album, but where does it fit in scenewise? British grind? I think not.

@ WAIF: Nah we shouldn't. Those bands are more of than not un-classic. Since these classics have been established, bands from other areas may be playing stuff previously only heard in one geographical location or scene, but I think that is pretty much where the line is drawn. Very few times do you hear of a band from Florida in the early 90s before death metal was so widespread playing "Swedish style DM".

This thread is going to have a dual purpose when it is complete:

1) Classic albums
2) Shit you should own if you don't already
Pretty much.

I guess we can just throw them under the general DM category or whatever.

Including stuff like US Power Metal and Swedish DM is important because those are where the genre-defining album came from.

No one gives a fuck about Uzbekistani sitar metal, for instance

This thread is in vain unless it will yield something we can sticky. That was kind of the point of that "Definition of Metal" thread, but what has become of that?

Yeah.
Okay. I'll try and put in the scenes under each category, but I probably don't know all the scenes, so help me out.

Okay. Organized by subgenre. If you know of any scenes within each genre throw those in, otherwise it goes under general "whatever metal" classics.
If a subgenre is missing go ahead and add it.
