Classic Albums

I answered you. The influence an album leaves on history is a testament to its status as a classic. Both Dream Theater and Stratovarius have such records.

You're going to get banned, so stop.

No, popularity doesn't necessarily correspond with influence. For instance, Venom never experienced much commercial success at all; but that didn't stop them from accidentally coining the term "black metal" and being one of the biggest influences on black metal bands ever.

Perhaps general popularity doesn't matter, but popularity in metal communities such as this one does.

I guess the definition of classic in this context is an album that is respected and/or praised by lots of metalheads.

Not only just Black metal, but also thrash.

Well, then I disagree with whoever said that. Popularity among bands (and a certain number of fans, no doubt) is essential to a "classic" record. It has to have its influence on a certain genre(s) and define the tenets of said genre(s). This doesn't necessarily mean commercial success; maybe the band wasn't popular at the time the record was released, but afterwards it was seen as a classic (as is the case with certain works of literature). Either way, a classic has to have a significant amount of influence. I'm sure whoever said popularity meant commercial success. You're just being picky about the definition of "popular."

"NEXT!"

Little asswipe.

Yeah, it is. "LOL, Venom did that so we are going to do that too but slightly different, LOL."

That is popularity no matter how you slice it.

I'm ignoring your posts about popularity from now on. We're talking commercial success, and bands do not need commercial success to record classic albums.

So we have to go with the band in question having an effect ON OTHER BANDS and what they do rather than the musical quality of the band itself for the definition of classic? Lame.

YES, you do. Bands like Venom and Mayhem were not great musicians by any means; but that hasn't stopped some of their records from becoming classics in the black (and possibly thrash) metal canons. It's not lame, it's simple fact. You're bailing water from a ship that's sinking too fast to save, just give it a rest.

? I am not supporting either commercial success or popularity.

Here is an idea then if the bands that followed them were indeed far better: call those follow bands classics. Why listen to a "classic" that is nothing but poor musicianship? Why even call it a classic if such is the case.

*shakes head*

I'm a condemned Metallica addict!

I have to say the Ride The Lightning album is still tops, I still have a sore neck from those listening sessions!

I can easily delete Lemegeton's posts with the click of a button.

But, because you guys always buy into the trolls, and can't seem to not ignore and decide to quot him, it creates a LOT OF WORK for me to clean up quoted posts.

I'm not cleaning up this time. From now on, if it is obvious trolling, REPORT FIRST, and DO NOT reply. I'm not going to wipe asses any more.
