Classics Reborn

Strangely enough I have never heard anyone call for a reform to play those albums, or repeat the success of those albums, only ever RIP. So in that aspect it's the same as Alice, he's only getting called to play WTMN

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by repeat the success of those albums? Personally I wouldn't want them to reform because of Countdown or the others you're right. RIP dominates. But I would have loved to hear some deep cuts of Youthanasia. They played their asses off on that album.
But are the members of the classic Alice line up as important to the success of the band as Marty and Nick were to the success of the Megadeth albums they were on?

The point is when ever there is talk about Alice reforming a band it's the WTMN band because it was a classic time for the band and it was considered a breakthrough album for them. When anyone calls for a reform on MD it's for the RIP line for the same reason and most of those people claim to want and RIP II not a Countdown II or a Youth II. Seeing the RIP line up reform and play Dystopia would be about as high on most peoples list as seeing the WTMN band reform and play Trash. People want classic, people want what they either missed when they were younger or saw and still remember. The problem with classic is that it's often not what we remember. For me I'd rather have the memory of seeing the RIP tour than seeing the same guys do it again, it might be different if the band remained together and grew together but with them going their separate ways I doubt 20 years on they could recreate what at the time was brilliant.

Well right, that's why I said initially they would have to do a RIP tour. but after that. I would have loved for them to keep going.
And I would love to see Poland in the band as well. The system Has Failed was a cool album I thought. And without Poland it would have been just Dave and at that point it may as well have been a solo album. Poland to me helped give it Megadeth cred. His guitar playing is just unmistakable.
I think the reason people call for the Rust line up is because Garr is gone it couldn't happen with the original line up.

To me that line up is a lot more than just music. Those four guys were dominating the scene. Megadeth was a super tight beast and like the Metallica line up of the time seemed like a gang. All the magazines had band photos instead of single shots Every one in the band had something cool about them. It wasn't just I'm a Megadeth fan. I was a fan of them all individually. And no I don't think they could make Rust2 although Dave says he has plenty of music from back then. I do think whatever they did would have been unbelievable though. because it was the styles of those guys coming together that put them over the edge.
Unfortunately Nick and Garr are both gone so we won't get a reunion of either.

I would have been interested to see where MD RIP could have gone had they not broken up but I'm not hung up on it. I know guys who wont listen to anything after RIP because it was the definitive line up and MD couldn't be anything ever again. But to me, I like most of their albums after RIP, I'm just not worried about who did and didn't play on them. Some players/musos do polarise me and I will listen to everything they do, then there some I won't but in general MD has never been one of those.

I would have been great if Metallica hadn't done the black album or at least waited lol We probably would have gotten Rust 2 and it would have crushed! :D

For me the players come in to play just because they had such personalities. Both Gar. Poland, Marty and Chris and I think even Jeff to me and now Kiko and we'll see what Dirk he can do. Some people can come in and everything is cool and sometimes someone comes in that throws everything off and in Megadeth to me that means that little something extra. Some bands it doesn't matter as much but the lead in Megadeth has always sounded a bit exotic.

I was one of 'those' people who liked the Black album from the minute it came out and I think because the media shit about the Metallica/Megadeth feud ramped up each time one of them did something I was adamant I would like both and ignore all the press. I remember not reading any reviews of RIP until I'd had it for nearly a year because I wanted to listen to it without influence of biased reporting. I don't know if that made my thoughts of the album better or worse but the media still print shit about both bands and I still listen to both bands so I call it a draw :)

I skipped school the day the Black album was releases to get it as soon as the record store opened. I really liked it for years and years. But as time has gone by a lot of it doesn't cut it for me anymore. It sounds like a lot of filler and not enough energy. And if i had known what it would lead to I never would have bought it lol.
But you're talking to someone that still listens to Testaments Three Days In Darkness over and over again in the car, especially the last minute :tickled:

I don't remember the last time I listened to the Black album but I know if I put it on now I could happily sit there and listen to (and probably sing to) it from start to finish. I don't know if it's the first Metallica album I would reach for but it's probably one of them.
Dark Angel's Leave Scars is that album for me. I don't listen to it in the car, was listening to Kreator today though, but it's an album I listen to quite often

Yeah me too but I'm not holding my breath, he's too busy selling drum kits on Fleabay.

Is he still on tour with Testament? I don't remember seeing much about them lately if they are.

Yeah even his website says that they finished in May, so maybe he's having a sleep in, he is getting old.

Classic and recently reborn.

GNR's Appetite was 30 years old on Friday. And look at them today, the highest grossing tour of 2016 and heading that way for 2017
Sabbath's Masters of Reality was 46. Everyone knows Sabbath is old
Loudness' Devil's Soldiers was 35. Many divided thoughts on this band over the years but I always liked them, just not enough to buy every album.
Stryper The Yellow and Black Attack 33 years old. I loved the fact that people hated these guys purely because they were god rockers. Their last album was pretty average but that's no reason to hate them.
Dio's Dream Evil 30 years old. Dio songs are being used in car commercials in this country, I think he's finally hit the big time :)
Hevy Devy Ocean Machine: Biomech This one surprised me I didn't think it was that old. Devy hasn't that long ago left our shores, he puts on a darn good show most times I've seen him and even a bad show of his is better than a good show of many bands.

Yeah GnR is out there just raking it in! Rock's dead huh Gene? I can't believe it's 30. That doesn't seem right!
Sabbath, never gets old lol

I never got into Styper. Just not a god rocker I guess.
I never even heard of Loudness really until a few years sgo. But i actually listened to something last night and couldn't get into it.
I haven't heard Dio on a commercial here yet lol I'm sure his x wife is working on it though.

Ocean machine, I was surprised to see it was 20. the only thing I can think of is that I saw some re release years ago and thought it was the original release?

Didn't Gene say selling music is dead? I thought his comments were only about recorded music because even he knows he makes big money from touring. I remember reading an article a year or two back and they reckoned even an album like Death Magnetic which did sell a lot of albums wouldn't make back what it cost to produce, that's why bands tour. However it's easy to see why GNR made money, cheapest tickets (not including fire sale tickets at the end) ranged in price from $150 - over $500 in this country. Even in 92 when GNR came and played two shows here they demanded and got $1M per show so it's hardly surprising they topped the lists for gig money.

I watched a few GNR videos and there is one from the last few days that claims to be good footage I haven't watched yet but I don't really have any desire to buy any new albums of their, but I would buy a new Sabbath album.

Stryper was just another band, but not listening to them because they were Christian is like not farting because it smells.

I did laugh at Dio's missus (Wendy is it?) with that whole devil horns thing. Making out like Gene is the evil bastard wanting to make money off everything, at least Gene is alive and doing it to himself, Ronnie's missus seems to just bring out new idea to pawn a dead man when things go quiet.

Hevy Devy has done some weird and eclectic shit in his time and some of it is hard to listen to but he's someone I always give a go when he releases something new.

Well, ask Metallica today if albums sell lol Sabbath sold pretty well too. Gene's problem is he's Gene.
I don't know what Gene meant. But if you say something is dead there shouldn't really be exceptions.

You're forgetting I care about lyrics. I got enough God having to got to church. Don't need it on my fun time.

That hologram of Dio is disrespectful end of story. That's how I feel about lol

Devin is awesome, been a fan since VAI. But I don't really love anything aside from that and SYL

I know Larz was a big part of the whole Napster is evil push which lost him a lot of friends but it is rather eye opening to see just how little money bands makes out of the CD itself rather than the rest of the stuff that goes with selling a band. Given the time it takes some bands to make a CD you really do have to wonder why they bother, then look at a band like GNR who haven't released a song in 20 years (we can ignore Chinese Democracy because that's just an Axl solo album), and it's easy to see why some bands think making CD's sucks. I wouldn't all be surprised to see bands like Metallica etc doing greatest hits, or specific album tours over the next 5 - 10 years. Bands like Megadeth did small shows for one album, Maiden did an entire world tour of old songs, it's only time before we have "Kill 'Em All Again" or "God Gave Rock N Roll Too You II, as well, and again, forever, still part 5."

SYL is probably what got me into Devy but he plays such a wide range of stuff it's the other stuff that keeps me interested. I get bored listening to the same band, same genre, same everything time and time again, put on the Devy discography and it's got a wide range of music to listen too. My wife's play list always sounds the same, the bands change (so she tells me) but all the music sounds the same, she thinks it's an insult that I don't like listening to it but because I don't have the same interest in it as her and really don't care about the actual bands or who they are, they probably are all different but to me they could be the same people, the same goes for mine if I don't change it up a bit.

Oh man even before Napster record companies were just raping bands. I think a new band was like 20cents a cd for their first album and not much better after and that was when cd's were $15-$20. Napster, yeah at the time I was like fuck you Lars you guys credit your success to tape trading. But it's gone so far past that. You can't copy a tape for a million people instantly lol
The cost isn't nearly what it used to be. Metallica and GnR don't have to spend a million dollars making an album they just do lol
Look at Overkill they've been producing their own albums for a while now and They sound as good as anyones.
Personally I need new music from a band. If I don't get new music what's the point in following them? Unless they've been churning out shit I don't like lol. Chinese Democracy is funny like that because I couldn't have cared less when it came out and I heard some of it.
but when they do some of those songs live I don't think they're that bad. Slash of all people, who back in the day was in my top five of worst guitar players has actually gotten much better, cleaner smoother faster more licks and he makes those new songs not so bad to me.

Haha so you and your wife have long playlists and they don't match up?
