Clearing up guitars

Never try to tweak guitars in a vacuum, you'll take years getting nowhere. You hear those drums you are working with? How they have an upper ear brightness that smacks? Does your guitar track carry the same smack? Those are the kind of things you should aim for. The way a guitar track interplays with drum tracks is very important, as Grey said, a great guitar track next to a bad drum mix will only sound like ok guitars.

Hmm so this whole time I've been focusing on the guitars when really I should've been focusing on the drums lol. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I should do with the drums?

would you post the drums midi so I can try this song? that sounds like fun

edit: i mean ill attempt to record the guitars myself DI and see how close I can get

Okay so I'm back again! This time I bought a bass and added it to the track. So let me know what you guys think now.

Newest clip is the Marshalll? Diggin it more. The T75 is finicky and you gotta spend some time looking for the sweet spot on them. I think you would benefit from lowering the volume of the guitars just a bit, though. They're still burying the drums.

And get that Ferric TDS plugin. Run it through with one of the more mild presets and see how it sounds. It could be amazing or it could be garbage after you work with it. Running the drum buss through it could help as well.

The last clip is a huge improvement. I think you're on the right track. As has been mentioned, now it's just a matter of doing subtle little adjusts to let the drums cut through just a little more without the guitar drowning it out.

The T75's suck out mids so you gotta put them back in or mix the cab with V30's or a different driver that puts the mids back in. Agreed 100% with the Ferric TDS - adds subtle greatness to guitar tracks among other instruments.

The guitars still sound a little distant sounding. Try turning up the mids and putting the mic on the grillcloth. If it's too much back it away an inch at most. Otherwise put it up against the grillcloth and angle it a little.

Does anyone have any advice on how to make my guitars sound clearer in the mix and really pop out?

I always recomend having your rhythm guitarist record a crystal clear clean track after he's done with the dirty ones. Mix it in the center underneath to bring clarity to the chords. Many platinum selling records from the 80s & 90s were done this way. Not sure why producers don't do it much anymore.

You may not ever have to use it, but it's always good to have. By doing this, you will also have a clean track for re-amping, if you decide later to run it through a different amp setup.
