cobra, 5150, and mark III clip

Ok, here goes....

Intesting music, no question there. I found the rhythm guitars sounding a little too nasal for my tastes.... perhaps crank the amp up louder & get the cabinet more involved? I'm not saying it's a bad tone by any stretch of the imagination, I just think there's room for improvement.

The kick was very "plastic" sounding... what kind of heads/mic were you using?

The toms, however, seemed to be lacking any attack at all. Again, what heads/mics were used?

Don't get me wrong, it's a massive improvement over your earlier drum recordings & I know you've been working hard on them. It shows.

i've got all the amps cranked pretty loud...my 5150 post volume is on 4, with the other amp levels set to match; i think the guitars are gonna require a bit of post eq tweaking (they're totally raw here)

we used an audix d6 kick drum mic, the 'plastic' sound i believe comes from my drummer using plastic beaters in addition to kick pads that had metal discs in them for more of a 'clicky' tone...while it sounds good live, i think it was overkill in this situation but he inisted on using them rather than a more conventional type

there's actually a few high frequencies cut to try to get some of that outta there, and no high end boost @ all

tom mics were sennheiser e604's...for heads we used some evans clear/coated hybrid heads; i didn't care much for the sound of them, but we were going thru hell trying to get the normal clear heads tuned properly (we went thru a drum dial and tension watch with no luck) in the end we decided a sub-par tom sound was better than something with more attack that was horridly out of tune

thanks for the honest critique, and altho i feel this is one of my better mixes...i agree there's room for improvement

having proper equipment to work with this time around, in addition to the advice i got from your thread i've learned a lot of things that i'm gonna insist on doing next time we record

I agree, this is definitely a huge improvement over your last stuff.

My biggest complaint is that on the more technical riffs, your guitar tracks aren't very tight. Work on getting that tight as a witches cleft, and things should be sound better just because of that (on the guitar front).

that's pretty slick overall. you come up with some pretty off the wall but cool sounding stuff.

the first guitars have a tunnelness to the tone. it's okay, just an observation

yeah i was concentrating more on sound than on playing...i've already re-tracked most of it, and i assure you the final product won't have the guitar slop that slipped thru here

thanks for checkin it out guys
