So this has been on my mind lately and with my new computer setup, I am going 100% non-pirated programs.

So now I am an official Reaper user.

Feels good.

:o

Want to recommend some free vst/plugs :heh:

Congrats man.

Ferox is an analog tape simulator that is really good http://www.jeroenbreebaart.com/
Kjaerhus Classic series are very useful plugs http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/classic-series.php

If you buy Computer music magazine the DVD included has a hundred or so plugins (lots of crap, but some good ones) The CM/PSP spring verb is one of my favorites
http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php is pretty much the definitive place to find plugins. There are 620 free VST plugins for XP listed.
I don't use Reaper, but its got one of the best gate plugins I've found.

Thanks for all the links and such guys. Now I know non of the so called 'clean' cracked warez I used to run can't somehow make my pc act funny.

good decision. you will appreciate the software you bought way more that way.
I really enjoy using channelstrip, waves API etc cause I had to save up for them and really decide to buy them. makes you use the stuff way more conciously than just downloading everything and using tons of different eq just cause you've got them.

that way you have to think about what you really wanna spend money on/buy and you'll learn to really use it and to appreciate it.

I think the hardest thing for a budget producer to do is 1) be legit with all software and plugins and 2) sound competitive with guys who use WAVES plugins. Thoughts?

don't think so.
honestly I think switching from good freeware (kjaerhus etc) to waves won't improve your sound much.
it's still 99% about how you operate the plugins.
sure there are better sounding plugins and plugins that don't sound good, but if you aren't able to achieve kickass results with freeware plugs you won't achieve great sounds with waves, sonnox etc as well...

plus waves are by far not the be all end all plugins! sure, they have nice stuff, but so do others (UAD etc)

and using only legit software means you're dedicated to running a serious business....I honestly think THAT will make you a better engineer in the end than fucking with tons of crackedn plugins in your bedroom.

Waves are good but if everyone is using pirated or retail versions than everyones mix is going to sound the same. It helps to branch out and try different things.

If you're looking to go legit, I can wholeheartedly recommend the UAD plugs. Their customer service is also fantastic with deals and discounts happening on a monthly basis.

I've been very lucky to have a client (I do post-prod and other stuff for an advertising company) pay for me to have a compatible setup with theirs so they paid for one of my Waves Bundles and my Nuendo 3 licenses as part of my contract with them. I bought the SSL Bundle myself and it's my go-to for virtually everything and don't feel like I need much else.

I also bought Sonar 7(and have since ditched it) and Cubase Studio 4 (ditto) so I use my Nuendo/Waves setup for my own stuff and feel a little guilty about it, but it's rock-solid compared to the compatibility hell I went through with both Sonar 7 and CS4. Neither application liked my particular setup of choice.

after my legit version of nuendo crashed three times yesterday in the middle of drum tracking, I was ready to pirate anything I could get my hands on.

is reaper less of a CPU hog?

I like Reaper alot, the new version is very stable. As far as the cpu, I havent experienced a huge cpu drain. I do run a dual core system though

no waves here...
and no crac[-k]s either.

Lasse is right, when you had to save to buy it, you appreciate it much more, learn about it much more and know how to use it better.
If you're running a professional studio, and i mean any studio taking money, you shouldnt use cracked software. end of
