Well, perhaps, while he was still sleeping, she woke up and now that her lust had gone, she repented and went to her husband to confess? And then the townspeople hang her and cast her body away (as he looks at the body later).

Makes it all a bit more tragical, doesn't it. Although I still would have preferred HE killing her.
