D&D

D&D is cool, I've done it in the past, though I actually prefer the World of Darkness games because they seem to lend themselves better to intrigue/mystery and I think the game mechanics are a little cooler. I was never confident enough in my wits and improv abilities to DM a game myself, but I think if I were to get back into it at this point in my life I would not have much trouble DMing.

Main thing that prevents me from D&D-ing/WoD-ing/etc. these days is that it requires large time commitments and a lot of mental energy, and I would rather reserve those for "higher priority" things in my life like programming projects, job searching, practicing music, adding to my website, etc.

One friend of mine has been ridiculously into roleplaying for as long as I can remember, and has been doing games on this site (http://rpol.net/) for years now.

I hate D&D (by that I mean I hate the 3rd edition Dungeons and Dragons), but I love Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. The d20 system of the newer rules may be simpler, but I feel that the AD&D system is more versitile. Besides, you can't beat the classic modules: Ravenloft, Dark Sun, Spelljammer, Forgetten Realms. THAC0 for life!

ive played some computer games based on D&D like Icewind Dale 2 and Neverwinter Nights but not the "true" D&D.

Krig plays it, i think.

I've only ever played 3.5 but I used to have a blast playing it with my friends back in the day.

I used to play with some friends but two of them are in my band and the other I haven't seen in a good eight months so whenever we're together it's for band practice rather than D&D. That said, it was fun. I played a chaotic-neutral half-orc barbarian who killed shit with a greatsword, and I have to say I was the mvp for my party due to my ability to kill everything while the other guys feebly shot their bows and magic missiles.

3.5 ftw. 4E sucks dick!

Started when I was like 13 (back in 1993) with second edition. played for a couple years.
hated it for some odd reason and didnt start playing again until 2001 after seeing Fellowship of the Ring.

Guess what type of character I made? yep. Ranger.
Made an asian type guy named Hkutoko Son Ti. total badass!
dont remember the whole story, but his father was having problems with the Yakuza when Hkutoko was a baby and he sent him off to be raised by the elves. I dont remember what his dad was, some rich important dude that knew the elves well.
So he goes to the elves and becomes a ranger with his fathers Katana and Wakizashi. blah blah blah, MASSIVE story lines with probably the best DM on the planet.
Eventually making it to 17th level, imagine a 17th level planar Champion, Shadow Scout, Ranger!
7 fucking attacks a round. I was a giant destroyer. Literally we destroyed the most powerful giants in one round.
100 pts of damage in a round was fairly common.

oh and another thing. Our badass DM was a landscape architech and his maps were amazing!

Probably my favorite campaign was our Ninja campaign. Made it to 9th level. SO. MUCH. FUN!!!
made my character 2ninja, 7monk. fast as hell. great hide/MS
and some really cool magic items.

since then our DM and his brother have moved to Phoenix AR and we havent played since Jan of 07.
Im playing in another campaign here in town but it just isnt the same. :(

oh, also we played a 3rd edition Starwars campaign. amazing. made a 13th level Jedi. I have a huge summary written up and will post it here so you guys can read it. very cool stuff.

here's the Starwars adventure. You guys will get a kick out of it. takes place during episode 1,2,3ish. we never finished it :(

I played some in high school. It had it's pros and cons. It seemed that we spent more time looking up rules and making characters than we did actually playing. That being said, one thing I really did like about the game compared to PC RPGs is the level of depth on all the abilities, and classes, and all that jazz you could use.

In the end though I think I do prefer MMORPGs more.

For me D&D died after second edition AD&D. It lives on for me through video games like Oblivion and Dragon Age. It is a very powerful game that can rig the mind with imagery and adventure. Much more powerful than a lame ouija board. I recommend you check out Palladium(better than d&d), RIFTS & GURPS if you enjoy roleplaying games.

There's a lot of freeware online which can make game mechanics and character generation simpler. Here's one I used for AD&D 2nd Ed.: http://www.adnddownloads.com/main.php?lang=en
The reason I don't play anymore is because it is so fucking hard to find players who aren't completely intolerable people. I'm not going to RPG with a guy who's in the SCA and never breaks character.

Love D&D and Roleplaying games in general. I had a DM here that was great at intertwining all our previous campaigns into one huge epic storyline. All our old characters become npcs and everything we did in old games had an effect on the current. Tons of fun. Too bad he went off and joined the army.

Why do people complain about the different versions? For me the fun was always in the banter rather than the game itself, so whether or not the wizards were properly balanced against goblins wasn't really a big deal.
