Dance of Death - hit or miss? A review...

By the way, who drew that horrible front cover on DoD? There was no credit given to any artist...

...I bet it was that Gers. :D

Also, what are your thoughts about the naked blurry half naked girls on the inside pages? I mean, why blur such glorious specimens in thongs and high heels?

According to one rumor I've heard floating around, the artist responsible refused credit after seeing his rough draft get digitally butchered...
Yeah well somebody fucked up. That cover is a disaster - and Maiden have normally produced some of the best album/single covers of all time. I can't even yearn for Derek Riggs though since he lost his edge once he became obsessed with CGI as opposed to the old paint brush.

I think Mr Riggs (oooh, same name as my history teacher :loco: ) had a falling out with Mt Smallwood over money matters...funny how they brush that under the carpet...

If the DoD artwork was originally going to be...uhh...non-CGI...well, I see a lot of potential for improvement there. Still a bit cluttered though, ne?

this record definetelly grew on me after a few listens, much better than BNW IMHO.

I like NEW FRONTIER a lot. Am I the only one that thinks it sounds like Parallels era FATES WARNING. Bruce even sounds like Ray Adler on the chorus.

By the way, has anyone read the article on Iron Maiden in the new BWBK edition? I haven't read it closely but a few things I quickly picked out:

1 - BNW was half written before Smith and Dickinson rejoined.

2 - Smith and Dickinson wrote loads more for DoD but it never got used...I'm thinking they could use that material on the next Bruce album...

3 - Bruce admits they "got a caning" for that front cover - the 'warped' look was supposed to be intentional...yeah, right.

With all seriousness, who here thinks Dance of Death is better now compared to when they first heard it? I do.

I know it's going to seem *obvious*, but I cannot imagine my top 10 list without DoD at year end.

It seriously gets better with every listen.

Oh, too bloody rightly! :D I have firmly established that with everyone who cares to listen irl  I think it's knocked DragonForce of my #1 spot for best album of 2003 :)

The new Maiden is a grower, that much is certain...I've definitely gained appreciation for Rainmaker, Age Of Innocence, and Journeyman (though I still think it shouldn't have been in the all-important closing position) with multiple listens...
