Aye sir. The only animals that can do it successfully have a type of alcohol in their cells.
 
I believe a lot of the damage comes from something to do with the jagged crystalline structures that form from the ice in the cells, slicing up the membranes. Quick freezing avoids this somehow. You still have to worry about ice taking up more volume than liquid water, but maybe it's not as big of a deal.
