Or how best to spend $100...

OK, so, here's the deal. I grew up listening to thrash mostly (36 years old now). Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Anthrax. Didn't branch out a lot. I was a bit sheltered. But I have been listening to some death metal on the satellite radio and some samples online (weak, I know, but it's what's available now) and I am very interested in getting into it. Strangely enough, I just got a $100 gift cert to Amazon and I am going to spend it on a death metal starter kit. Let's assume I won't be able to add to it for a few months, so it should have some classics and new stuff for a well-rounded introduction.

So basically, what are the first 10 albums that a beginning death metal fan should own...?

Thanks for the help.

1. Incantation- "Golgotha" (Onward to Golgotha)

2. Autopsy- "Torn from the Womb" (Mental Funeral)

3. Morbid Angel- "Fall from Grace" (Blessed are the Sick)

4. Deicide- "Repent to Die" (Legion)

5. At the Gates- "Kingdom Gone" (The Red in the Sky is Ours)

6. The Chasm- "A Portal to Nowhere" (Deathcult for Eternity: The Triumph)

7. Immolation- "Nailed to Gold" (Here in After)

8. Demilich- "When the Sun Drank the Height of the Water" (Nespithe)

9. Demigod- "Slumber of Sullen Eyes" (Slumber of Sullen Eyes)

10. Gorguts- "Orphans of Sickness" (The Erosion of Sanity)

11. Dismember- "Override of the Overture" (Like an Ever-flowing Stream)

12. Suffocation- "Liege of Inveracity" (Effigy of the Forgotten)

13. Molested- "Along the Misty Morass" (Blod Draum)

14. Order from Chaos- "There Lies Your Lord...Father of Victories" (An Ending in Fire)

15. Bolt Thrower- "World Eater" (Realm of Chaos)

16. Infester- "Chamber of Reunion" (To the Depths...In Degradation)

17. Obituary- "Chopped in Half" (Cause of Death)

18. Asphyx- "The Rack" (The Rack)

Being that you primarily listened to thrash, I think Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness would be a good starting point.

Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness is definitely one I was already considering. The other bands listed above - some I know and others I don't. I must say that I prefer buying whole albums instead of songs. So which of those listed would be on the short list?

This should be a good start for somebody coming from a thrash background:

Possessed - Seven Churches
Pestilence - Consuming Impulse
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness or Abominations of Desolation
Master - Master
Hellwitch - Syzygial Miscreancy
Nocturnus - The Key
Deicide - Deicide
Death - Scream Bloody Gore
Massacre - From Beyond
Carnage - Dark Recollections
Mortuary - Blackened Images
Merciless - The Awakening
Asphyx - Embrace the Death

For newer albums, try maybe:

Nominon - Recremation
Tribulation - The Horror
Repugnant - Epitome of Darkness
Excoriate - On Pestilent Winds
Terrorama - Horrid Efface and Omnipotence
Pentacle - Under the Black Cross
Ares Kingdom - Return to Dust and Incendiary
Nocturnal Graves - Satan's Cross
Assaulter - Salvation Like Destruction
Vanhelgd - Cult of Lazarus

I'd like to toss out Massacra - Final Holocaust and Insanity - Death After Death in addition to what Dodens recommended

EDIT: wat death by death ... as opposed to

Yeah, Enjoy the Violence is good, but it drags a bit at times. Final Holocaust is just nonstop fucking riffs.

I'm 37, so you should ignore all the children's recs and heed my worldly advice only. You need most of the classics with a stand out newer style album:

Death - Spiritual Healing
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick or Alters of Madness (the former is my fave)
Deicide - Deicide
Obituary - Cause of Death
Pestilence - Testimony of the Ancients
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Carcass - Nectroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
Decapitation - Organic Hallucinosis

Tried to make this fairly rounded out in style and covering multiple periods of death metal.

Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness or Blessed are the Sick
Dismember - Like An Ever Flowing Stream
Decapitated - Nihility
Death - Scream Bloody Gore or Spiritual Healing
Skinless - Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead
Cannibal Corpse - Gore Obsessed
Aborted - Goremageddon: The Saw and Carnage Done
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal
Vehemence - Helping the World to See
Carnage - Dark Recollections OR Entombed - Left Hand Path

These aren't necessarily the best of the best, but generally are strong releases that serve as a good gateway if you will.

I approve with most of this list, but I'd change Testimony of the Ancients to Consuming Impulse and Organic Hallucinosis to Winds of Creation.
