Death- Where do I begin?

Meh, probably Leprosy. Not a fan, though.

Ha ha I'm a gay fag boy! :tickled:

Seriously though, from all the answers in this thread you'll have to do whatever the fuck you like! PERSONALLY I'd say start with "Scream Bloody Gore", then "Leprsoy" - work your way from the early stuff onwards. In my opinion, (and I'm in the VAST minority here) Death only got worse over the years. From the basic, but sheer genius of Leprosy ("Pull The Plug" "Open Casket" anyone?) and "Human" to the overblown and overworked "Sound Of Perseverance", Chuck was at his best when he kept it simple.
Leprosy, Human and SH are the ones I'd go for first. Although their cover of "Painkiller" turned up REALLY FUCKIN' LOUD is utterly fantastic!

Now if that's not an abuse of power I don't know what is... :Smug:

I never mentioned you did I - your guilty conscience has made you paranoid my friend.

Back on topic - once the original poster has followed my advice and got Leprosy and Human, he should get "Litany" by Vader, as it's in a similar vein to Death, and it's great.

I started off with TSOP, sure its mostly wankery and an excuse to show off technicality and the composition suffers as a result, I still really, really like it.

However my favorite release by them is Individual Thought Patterns, IMO the perfect incarnation of death where, technicality, and good songwriting are well balanced. But keep in mind all their releases are great, you cant really go wrong with death imo.

 One of my all-time favorite albums. I seriously think that is death at their prime, and it is also one of the greatest death metal CDs ever released.

Where to start? Easy. Save up and buy the entire catalog.

Death is a band that progressed so flawlessly and perfect it's great to listen to how they changed from the first album right up to the last. I think they are the perfect example of a band who pregressed slowly throughout their career and never altered threir sound too dramatically from album to album.

The Live album is more for fans only because the sound is pretty rough so I'd avoid that one. But if I was to pick just one to start with I'd say Human.

Ok you fuckin maniacs, thanks for all the help, I guess this week I'll go out and get HUMAN and I.T.P.

I'll let you guys know what I think.

Thanks again, you crazy bastards!

Death didn't release a bad album

The only thing that slightly irritates me about TSOP is the breaks in some of the songs. But on the whole, its still killer.

I think; Individual Thought Patterns - Symbolic - Spiritual Healing - Leprosy - Human - TSOP - Scream Bloody Gore is the way to 'get into' death.

Symbolic being the best :)

All the stop/start riffing of TSOP and, to a lesser extent Symbolic ruin the flow of the songs a little for me. That's why I prefer the more direct things like "Pull The Plug", and "Open Casket".
