Defecation - Intention Surpassed
Nuclear Blast, 2003
The first album of Defecation Purity Delution that was released in 1989 has been acclaimed as a cult grindcore record. I was never fortunate enough to get near that album so I can't compare the two Defecation works to each other but I don't think this new album Intention Surpassed will reach a cult level.
Defecation was originally formed by Mitch (Righteous Pigs) and Mick Harris (Napalm Death), later Mitch became a ND member too. Their first album work came out in 1989 and they started to work on the second album but because of the ND contract with Earache they were not allowed to release any album at an other record label. So Mick left Defecation and Mitch made another extreme album under the name of Meathook Seed. Mick even left ND shortly. After 14 years Mitch decided to finally make the second Defecation album, he made it almost all by himself but with a little help of his friend Russ Russel. They put 13 songs on Intention Surpassed, short but aggressive ones.
It's not really grindcore now, it's much closer to a kind of industrial death metal. It's not easy to listen to. It's chaotic, fast and aggressive with wall breaking heavy guitar riffs. It's not ultra brutal, ultra fast or complex but tight enough to keep your attention but also provides time to catch a breath. The music is like a dense mess towering over us and the effected vocals make it colder and insaner. Mitch played on drums but most of the time it sounds rather like a drum machine, I can't decide if it's a good or bad point in this case now. Otherwise he did a great job with the album. You can even find melodies that you can grab for, like in the song 'Fibre Optical Illusion', 'Under Surveilance' or the madding guitar riffs in 'Cryonically Preserved' or in 'Granted Wish'.
I think time will tell if intention has been surpassed or not, because it's too early to decide it now.
In short it's a modern, extreme album from the strongest, that you may listen to from time to time but it's not something you will feel an urgent hurry for. But if you get into it you will realise it's a killer record.
