I´m getting cables for recording live shows. Since my fireface has balanced line level inputs , shall i get balanced or unbalanced wired cables ? what i mean is, do most medium/big mixing desks have balanced or unbalanced direct outs ?

From my lack of knowledge(but some recent experiance) most bigger desks have a stereo balanced pair of outs and unbalanced outs for each channel. I could be compltly wrong here so someone correct me if I am!

Most live desks are unbalanced, but it shouldn't hurt to use the balanced cables. I've never had a problem with it.

I had!

There can be a problem to use balanced cables to connect an unbalanced source to a balanced input. It depends on the equipment. It can happen that the (-) is open, only (+) and (ground) connected. To be sure use unbalanced cables.

Example:
I have a the unbalanced Tascam MA-8 in the studio (as addition for uncrital stuff). Connecting it with balanced TRS into the RME ADI-8 works great. Connecting it to the SPL Charisma don't.
