Djent is like deathcore. They try so damn hard to be heavy and technical that they sacrifice everything that makes music great and just end up with a pile of overproduced notes. And that soulless shit is definitely not metal.
Remove everything that makes prog metal what it is, leave the chugging riffs and turn up the gain. Fuck no.
Just so you guys know, Periphery plays with MUCH less gain then any death metal band, when they were still using tube amps their gain was on 3.5, now they use an axe fx (which for all of you non-guitarists is a multi amp/effects processor used by many artists like opeth, dream theater, cynic, megadeth, animals as leaders, the faceless, nevermore, between the buried and me, and so on)
With their gain low, they used tubescreamers along with 2 noise gates, one to get rid of all noise and then one used with a compressor pedal to create the really fast bass response for those "quick stop" riffs.
If your going to act like a "true" metalhead don't judge a band (especially a prog metal band) for using gain on "10" considering brutal death metal, slam death metal, hell even regular death metal artists usually run extremely high gain amps (like peavey 6505/5150's) and set the gain very high, if periphery played with the gain on 10 you wouldn't be able to hear all the instruments which are obviously highly technical, and for your average music listener, probably boring, or to "flashy"
Again, if your complaining about "chuggy riffs" then almost every extreme metal genre just isn't for you, I definitely agree that most deathcore is terrible, but bands like animals as leaders and periphery have plenty of soul and emotion in their music, take this song for example
I personally think Periphery perfectly blends technicality with groovy riffs and melody. Meshuggah is known for starting the whole "djent" subgenre/style, yet other than low tuned guitars, their really is no similarities at all between the bands considered "djent" and Meshuggah, who I think have really stopped trying making passable music, they even admitted they aren't trying to be innovative at all, the riffs on koloss are some of the most simple and boring shit I've ever heard, I really see no need for them to have 8 string guitars considering they almost never play on any string other than the bottom 3-4.
