Djent Sucks

metal-archives has a surprisingly good grasp on what's metal and what's not

it's a very subtle distinction but you Feel it in your Heart if something is metal or not and i personally very rarely disagree with m-a

Are you saying bands like Periphery and Tesseract aren't metal? That's fucking stupid.

Djent is like deathcore. They try so damn hard to be heavy and technical that they sacrifice everything that makes music great and just end up with a pile of overproduced notes. And that soulless shit is definitely not metal.

I was going to mention that, its kinda kinda funny though, djent for the most part is just heavier progressive metal.
Remove everything that makes prog metal what it is, leave the chugging riffs and turn up the gain. Fuck no.

Just so you guys know, Periphery plays with MUCH less gain then any death metal band, when they were still using tube amps their gain was on 3.5, now they use an axe fx (which for all of you non-guitarists is a multi amp/effects processor used by many artists like opeth, dream theater, cynic, megadeth, animals as leaders, the faceless, nevermore, between the buried and me, and so on)

With their gain low, they used tubescreamers along with 2 noise gates, one to get rid of all noise and then one used with a compressor pedal to create the really fast bass response for those "quick stop" riffs.

If your going to act like a "true" metalhead don't judge a band (especially a prog metal band) for using gain on "10" considering brutal death metal, slam death metal, hell even regular death metal artists usually run extremely high gain amps (like peavey 6505/5150's) and set the gain very high, if periphery played with the gain on 10 you wouldn't be able to hear all the instruments which are obviously highly technical, and for your average music listener, probably boring, or to "flashy"

Again, if your complaining about "chuggy riffs" then almost every extreme metal genre just isn't for you, I definitely agree that most deathcore is terrible, but bands like animals as leaders and periphery have plenty of soul and emotion in their music, take this song for example

I personally think Periphery perfectly blends technicality with groovy riffs and melody. Meshuggah is known for starting the whole "djent" subgenre/style, yet other than low tuned guitars, their really is no similarities at all between the bands considered "djent" and Meshuggah, who I think have really stopped trying making passable music, they even admitted they aren't trying to be innovative at all, the riffs on koloss are some of the most simple and boring shit I've ever heard, I really see no need for them to have 8 string guitars considering they almost never play on any string other than the bottom 3-4.

Don't take this the wrong way or anything guys, but most of seem to know practically nothing about the genres good bands, or music in general, or instruments for that matter.

One person said death metal is suppose to be C or B tuned 6 strings, or it sucks? I mean fucking really? I can probably find 50 death metal bands that you didn't even know played 7 strings, that are highly regarded. Just a few quick examples, Decapitated (on their newer record), Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse, Nile etc. And i'm not even going to talk about the bands that tune lower than B on just 6 strings.

You guys are approaching this music as the general "fuck everything with hype and popularity guy" you all seem to only look for the bad in this genre of music, and use the worst possible bands as examples for the genre. This thread is full of fucking morons. When you all actually try to listen to the music with an open mind and TRY to like, it instead of saying, hmmm the vocals are fucking gay! The guitars are over gained! etc, and keep listening to whatever you deem decent, you will start to at LEAST appreciate it, whether you want to admit it to the public or not.

Another thing I forgot, 7 string and 8 string guitars are just tools for music, whats wrong with wanting more low end as well as the basic 6 string sound?

I like my chords to have eight notes minimum, four of which are the root. Its a must!

i dont think cannibal corpse played 7-strings on the albums that people (not me) actually care about

what i'm saying is fuck off to all modern shit forever, deal with it

death metal is ACTUALLY ABOUT looking like this and recording demo tapes with terrible sound and having bad guitars tuned town to c*

also, welcome to rc, i see you are "getting" it and fitting in quite handily

yeah a 5150 on 3-4 with a tubescreamer (gain low volume high) in front is the STANDARD SOLUTION for every band with no imagination these days, what's your point

this in no way means they are a metal band

* in actual reality of course you can use 7-string guitars and still be a good dm band, but you're entirely missing the point

soul and emotion [...] periphery

yo if "soul and emotion" means a cross between "reroute to remain" and green day with more audio quantization and drumagog then maybe you're right, i must not understand this "music" thing at all

Ive been playing guitar for 9 or 10 or something years. Cant remember. Point is, I know this shit. And you just, again, made my point: Overproduced. 2 noise gates and a compressor... You can get perfectly clear and aggressive natural (read: good) sounding tones minus all that shit. Its a plague on many bands, even otherwise good ones. Guitars should sound like actual instruments.
Oh and "heavy" does not equal "high gain". Not sure what sparked that rant. I never said anything about distortion, and for the record, I love whacked out fuzz and searing distortion.

Some said djent is prog metal with gain on 10 and chugging...

That setup was before any of their albums I believe.

Oh and and I'm very aware high gain does not equal metal, but if you don't think Periphery is metal then there is something wrong with your ears.

if you think you need 8 strings, odds are you are just shit at writing for bass guitar

this. they probably get them just so they can say "yeah i use an 8-stringer, fuck you all." i'll admit i'm using one right now making new stuff, but at least i utilize all of them instead of just the low end, and i only use that when appropriate.

here's someone who can utilize the 8 properly and tastefully:
