Do you ever feel a bit down about your level of recording knowledge?

Ugh...I wish sometimes I started down this path a long time ago. I have a vision in my head for how I'd like to be able to make things sound but I don't have the knowledge or wisdom to pull it off.

Sometimes this forum can be an inspiration and others, when I listen to the amazing quality of sound some of you guys produce, I feel so discouraged.

So I guess my question is, how do you keep your chin up during these vunerable times?

The only time I've actually felt down since i started this hobby 5-6 years ago was today actually. Not sure why. But I remembered that in this business, you never fully learn the art of recording or just figure it all out one day. EVERYTIME I sit down in front of my set up, I learn something new. And to me, that's part of the reason i do this. To make bands sound good and to KEEP learning. No matter how good you get, you're never done.

Never, everything seems like a challenge. You know that's impossible to learn in one day.

Currently I'm preparing recordings for my bands new CD. I really want to nail the drum sound like I've never done before. I've took 2 days of work last week just to check how my drums would sound the best in the space. Then worked a whole day on tuning the kit and micing it up. Now 2 full day and 5 evenings later I'm getting close to how I want it to sound. I always was able to get a good sound out of the drums, but now I'm getting really anal about it.

I've been recording now for close to 7 years, mainly drums since I've done session work, and my clients were satisfied with the files I delivered. I felt I now really wanted to step up.

Be patient, work hard, don't see obstacles, see challenges.

Sometimes. I know back in my more ambitious estimations I'd have been doing world-class releases at this point... but you have to be realistic. You can only do so much within your circumstances.

You just have to persevere. When I started this gig, I was pretty crap at it. No inherent bent toward it, everything learned an inch at a time, but it eventually locked in. It takes a while for all the knowledge to piece itself together and start making sense in your head.

Wow...I can't believe you are so humble. Everything I've heard you post sounds amazing.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Chin up and back to reading eh?

At the start, I was preeety confused. Nowdays, I am not. It's just clear to me that this is a never ending learning process, and I am fine with that. Now it's just soak in all the knowledge you can, build yourself up as you go.
