Does anyone else think that compression is WAY overused nowadays?

Just do it by ear man...

Put the compressor on the snare track, set attack to the fastest setting and increase the attack time until you hear the crack coming through. Easy as pie.

slower attack and faster release is better on drums.

Yeah he knows that, that's why he's saying set it to the fastest attack, and then INCREASE the attack until it's slow enough that you can hear the transient coming through unaffected.
