I was thinking about looking for a decent mixing workstation (for mixing band mastering audio) dont know why i was just thinking about it...Dont really have any program in mind, i was looking just thought i would post and get some comments !! It seems like a good idea to have 2 programs?

I run SX3 now and i think its awesome
Any suggestions

I don't really see the point; it's just more hassle to have to bounce stuff from program to program...

If you dont mind having to transfer between the different apps then it might be fun to change apps.
At least it gives you a fresh gui to look at.

I used to use one app for composing and one for the rest but that was simply because I thought the midi
capabilities of the one app was much better than the other.

I also don't see a point but if your looking for something different consider giving Reaper a try.

IMO it's better to learn to work efficiently within one daw then spend time learning two and I'll also add that cubase is very capable software and it should be able to take you from point A to point B without a problem.

Well, I would like to, because the amount of effects is so limited in Cubase SX 3 (9 per track, and in master channel? geez... not to mention you can't drag them around, which limits testing quite a bit), but with the amount of VST-instruments and using impulses etc, it would simply be too much of a hassle to record and mix in different programs.

Of course there would be the choice to do it all in Reaper, but it's still not as stable as Cubase is, especially with a large amount of VST-instruments. Also, MIDI drawing is quite clumsy in Reaper, and dragging/stretching MIDI items is very poorly done in it.

I like protools hd for multitrack recording, but then I edit and mix with Cubase, because that PT is just superstiff for editing... No separate tool for cutting (or "separating regions" as they call it in PT) for example, or if there is, I haven't found it yet. only way I've found is that you have to first select the location and press cmd+E... really frustrating compared to that you just choose your tool, click and thats it.

I record everything into a fostex mr-8 and transfer it to logic express to mix. I wouldn't recommend that though. I just have my imac in a set place that can't really accommodate gear. I don't mind it actually, but given that no one does it, it must suck!

just click where you want to cut with the selector tool and hit B (command focus mode). Or tab to the transient and hit b or make a selection, etc.
