Here's that list I was talking about. I made it when Dodens/Nec asked me for some non-Swedish osdm recs back in '05, though I never actually wound up sending him this document for whatever reason, and I just mentioned 4 or 5 bands to him instead. 
I haven't touched the list since February '06 according to the "modified date" on my computer. Maybe one day I will update the list.
Also, not all of it is "essential." This is just a list of osdm and osdm-styled stuff (and a couple old melodeath and death/doom records) that I have heard and enjoyed at least a little.
