Does the mainstream control the music an artist or band makes?

I heard that they did but I never found any proof. But it seems more than a coincidence that Fall Out Boy "went Emo" a little after the Emo fad was getting popular. And that all the members of Fall Out Boy were in Hardcore Punk bands (note: HARDCORE) before they formed Fall Out Boy.

Yes, popular demand has an impact on the music a musician makes. This has probably always been the case. It rose with the 15th century development of the printing press and greatly increased during the 20th century through the emergence of the record industry, commercial radio, and television. The music industry obeys the laws of supply and demand like any other.

:tickled:

Ok. Here in Chicago Fall Out Boy played local clubs. They have always sounded the same way. They were never hardcore punk or were in hardcore punk bands.

So no. There are tons of good mainstream bands that are not under control of fans or the record labels.

I don't pretend to know what "mainstream" will/can do to up and coming musicians/bands. Let's just say that, if they get their hands on you your fucked, in terms, of your OWN musical creativity. Fall-Out Boy were never creative musicians to begin with. Complete musical drek.

^ Very true. But its just weird how artists become like musical chameleons always changing their styles to whats in. I mean I said this before but what happened to some awesome new sound coming on the mainstream radio and making a gigantic splash? Now its just you hear whats in so nothing you hear is a surprise.

I said they were in hardcore punk bands, as in all the bands they were in before they formed fall out boy were hardcore punk.

If the band doesn't have complete creative control written into their contract, the music that they record won't get released by any label without approval.

Look at the case of Sigh and Century Media. From the band's own website:
"Because Century Media was disappointed that the band had not gone in a more black metal direction with the album, the band was forced to find another label to distribute Gallows Gallery."

The "mainstream" is usually controlled by a few media corporations who decide, usually by financial payment or other similar arrangements, which stuff gets on the air and what doesn't. Period. The end.

Just an example; U2's first couple albums were fairly good. "Joshua Tree" being their best(for me) It's bee all downhill since 1987 for U2.Strong evidence of mainstream agents, labels and producers getting their greedy hands on what was an(being kind) above average band. Of course, Bono's attitude isn't helpful. He's an egotistical, patronizing fuck. That will destroy any bands creativity.

I love Joshua Tree!
Mainstream and the media have a lot to do with music changing

look at lily allen, she's made a bomb with he own style, but now you've got kate nash and every other girl with a london accent jumping on the bandwagon

and artists like fall out boy, panic at the disco and that band that i cant think of the name of, once one of them brought out their first single, everyone wanted the huge publicity

One of my sister's teen girl magazines randomly inserts tiny pictures of Pete Wentz throughout the issue. Every issue.

Kind of tells you everything you need to know, huh?

This reminds me of how bands like Dokken, Europe, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, etc. changed their sound once glam wasn't popular anymore.

Music nowadays = Money

Of course everything is controlled by record companies. Does anyone think that a company is going to pump millions of dollars into a band without telling them what to do? They even tell them how they have to crap.

That used to happen in the 70's, but not anymore.

Yeah, with the advances in social science people can find out what pleases the common ear. Although what may please most people wears out very fast for them. Some artists do their own thing though, a lot of Rappers make their own beats. The reason why I wouldn't want to be mainstream if I be a musician is because I won't be able to do my own thing. I think that discourages lots of talented musicians. They want to be liked by a lot of people, but they don't want their creativity taken away, they don't want to be underground either so they have no motivation to make it anywhere. I do find that a lot more people are liking underground music and classic rock these days, and lots more people are saying "fuck the mainstream".

Yeah fall out boy were never harcore and are shit were shit and are still shit. they arent emo either they just pretending to be to get more money. and the mainstream do control bands. WHen they get very famous they seek getting more money not being better each time ending in playing for money notbecause they really like playing.

I never said Fall Out Boy was Hardcore, I said the members of Fall Out Boy were in Hardcore Punk bands before they formed Fall Out Boy.
