The term progressive and prog-rock are two completly different things.

From my experience anything in the 7 range is good but not essential by any stretch of the imagination. Anything that is weird in any way will probably end up in the 7s even if the author of the review says that it is his favorite album of the year....

Yeah, but when somebody says "proggy", they mean the progrock sound not the actual progression.

For example, nobody would ever describe Joy Division or Cocteau Twins "proggy".

Any term related to 'prog' refers to something quite different from what Kayo Dot are doing at any rate. Progressive music in general and 'prog' metal/rock are not the same.

I would certainly say that what Kayo Dot is progressive in the literal sense of the term.

I think Kayo Dot are both prog and Progressive. Seriously, you don't have to have 5 minute wank solo's or anything to be prog.

lol, kd and messiaen... i don't see the connection at all.

i don't mind the guys spelling messiaen incorrectly (done all the time), but a pet hate of mine has been rock critics referencing classical composers with their first name. always bugs me, though i guess its more my problem than theirs.
