Dragonforce: 44,000 U.S. sales in two months

It's amazing how fast people pick up the rhetoric like this new Video Game Metal bullshit. I'm a gamer. I multiplayer game online and have for years since the old days of Diablo I (for those of you who may know what that is), and I know what video game background music sounds like. Basing DragonForce's success on some idiotic relation to kids' facination with video game soundtrack music is ridiculous.

You don't seem to have much of a clue about videogames music if you're really saying that. Wow... I expected much more of a "gamer"...

And I'm assuming if you're using Diablo to talk about how much you know games' music, I am really confident that you have no clue about what real game music is all about.

OMG! Let me keep this simple. I wasn't slamming video game soundtracks. I'm well aware that there are complex compositions and orchestrations on video games. I was saying that you can't attribute a band's success to kids liking games. Not only kids play games, and many of those who do will never listen to Metal. Establishing a cause and effect between video games and DragonForce...
I agree.

It's funny to say dragonforce is now popular because it sounds like video game music

Concur.

What I'm hoping is that this rising tide will lift all boats, and maybe the same kids who are buying Dragonforce t-shirts at Hot Topic and showing up at their shows might just discover some other bands in the genre....but I'm not too hopeful.

:heh:

This would be great for the industry, but I don't see it happening either. For whatever reason, I can't see one popular band changing things. At least, not one like DF. They might be getting bigger, but they (or someone else) would need to be big on a much larger scale in order to shift trends (IMO). Think Nirvana or Pearl Jam. They essentially shifted an entire generation to a style of music.

Even if metal in some form became mainstream popular today, it would most likely be a fusion of metal and other popular music, the way Linkin Park mixed rap and radio rock. I expect DF to be more popular than most other bands, due to some appeal with the younger set, but I don't see nearly enough for a trend shift yet. Maybe the next big band would do it . . . ?

You never know, but I agree with you. Then again, look at what Quiet Riot's Metal Health did for hard rock in the 80's.

Anyone that thinks they don't deserve a headline tour can officially shut the hell up now. They are going to pass the latest from In Flames, Opeth, & Lacuna Coil easily at this rate. They are also going to outdraw tours from Blind Guardian & Stratovarius easily.

Whew....

...and a certain fast food chain sells billions and billions of wormburgers every year to fatass americans who do not know any better...

Dragonforce can headline wherever they want...I won't see them. No offense, but in my mind popularity does not equal quality...and certainly not ProgPower quality. If you booked them for PP8, I would still buy my gold badge and still go to the concert...but would not be around when Dragonforce took the stage.

Just my opinion...

Whats ridiculous IMO is that obviously you arent the gamer you claim to be. Tell me how many games you've played for the TURBO DUO (do you even know this system?), SEGA CD, SEGA SATURN, 3DO, SNES, DREAMCAST, etc.

What about the Turbo Grafix 16 or Sega Master System? Or lets not forget the Atari Jaguar, and before that, Lynx.

Goddamn, oldschool games are the shit...

Gotta love those oldschool games, eh?!

Why all the negativity?
If you don't like them, that is fine.
But it seems like you are truly ANTI-DragonForce based on their popularity alone.

No one ever said that popularity = quality. The last couple IN FLAMES albums are proof of that.

Though, to say "I would not watch their set if they played Prog Power" really makes you come off as an arse hole.

Yeah, it's pretty stupid to be "ANTI" some band because of their popularity.

It happens with almost every sub-genre of metal.
Look back to the late 80s / early 90's.
Testament got a lot of recognition, and went on big tours with Slayer, Priest, Maiden, etc.
Though many thrashers at the time were saying, "What about Overkill, Nuclear Assault, etc, etc."
It didn't mean that Testament were a BETTER band.
It's just what clicks at the time.

Maybe the poster above TRULY disliked DragonForce before.
If you weren't a fan before though, why would you even care?
Is it because you feel there are more deserving bands?

If it were Gamma Ray or Blind Guardian, you would probably be crying "sellout!"

I agree, maybe he didn't. And I didn't make a comment towards him, I said in general. Don't you agree that it's stupid to hate something because of its popularity?

I wouldn't care if I weren't a fan before, and nor I think he should if he hated the band before. Do I feel like there are more deserving bands? Yes. Don't you?

And I'd love to see Blind Guardian becoming more popular. Gamma Ray...hmm...I'm not the biggest fan. And I wouldn't call them sellouts.

Oh, don't you forget Coleco Vision!!! Long live the telephone look alike joystick!!!

Honorable mention: Commodore 64:)

Who'd have thought that they would blow up like this? It's really amazing. I would have loved to have heard the reaction of the Ozzfest crowd - bet some of those kids have no idea that form of music existed (lol).

Ozzfest attendees are prolly hungry for legitimate metal (smirk).

(snip)DF's singer didn't agree. After their show here I mentioned the 'rising tide' helping out other deserving bands and he was really down on the idea. "We're doing all the work; fuck 'em!" Direct quote.(snip)

Let's soak in that quote for a while.

When the bottom drops out, it is gonna hurt 'em hard.

That being said, their songs are innocuously fun and silly whenever I hear 'em on (College) metal radio

Oh yeah, like they invented the music they're playing. Like these idiots are capable of creating and not riding a fucking wave.

I hate these fucking clowns more and more every time I I learn more about them.

To sum up for people that don't know:

Two of the current Dragonforce lineup produced this:

"Hitler Metal want to bang my fucking head
And fist the living dead in the middle of the night alright
I really want to bang my head and fist the living dead middle of the night my sign
The Metal's in my blood and the power is here and now for you!
Hitler Metal! Sieg Hail!"

... they "explained this away" by saying they were only joking and paying tribute to the German metal bands that came before them (Sodom/Kreator side and the Gamma Ray/Running Wild side...).

However, earlier the band had put this little gem out (Only one of them was in the band at this time, but still...)

"Blood proud, blood pure, their blood
Spilled once more, sacred ground, might stand tall
Crush their spirit, till they fall

Aliens invade this place, white man stand up for your race
Be proud of your heritage, strong will, all through the ages
Angered but still with pride, show true feelings with nothing to hide"

Demoniac. Look 'em up. They pretty much turned into Dragonforce.

OK. Now I'm going to investigate this a little bit further. Thanx for this info.
