Dragonforce: 44,000 U.S. sales in two months

It's amazing how fast people pick up the rhetoric like this new Video Game Metal bullshit. I'm a gamer. I multiplayer game online and have for years since the old days of Diablo I (for those of you who may know what that is), and I know what video game background music sounds like. Basing DragonForce's success on some idiotic relation to kids' facination with video game soundtrack music is ridiculous.

You don't seem to have much of a clue about videogames music if you're really saying that. Wow... I expected much more of a "gamer"...

And I'm assuming if you're using Diablo to talk about how much you know games' music, I am really confident that you have no clue about what real game music is all about.

OMG! Let me keep this simple. I wasn't slamming video game soundtracks. I'm well aware that there are complex compositions and orchestrations on video games. I was saying that you can't attribute a band's success to kids liking games. Not only kids play games, and many of those who do will never listen to Metal. Establishing a cause and effect between video games and DragonForce...

What I'm hoping is that this rising tide will lift all boats, and maybe the same kids who are buying Dragonforce t-shirts at Hot Topic and showing up at their shows might just discover some other bands in the genre....but I'm not too hopeful.

This would be great for the industry, but I don't see it happening either. For whatever reason, I can't see one popular band changing things. At least, not one like DF. They might be getting bigger, but they (or someone else) would need to be big on a much larger scale in order to shift trends (IMO). Think Nirvana or Pearl Jam. They essentially shifted an entire generation to a style of music.

Even if metal in some form became mainstream popular today, it would most likely be a fusion of metal and other popular music, the way Linkin Park mixed rap and radio rock. I expect DF to be more popular than most other bands, due to some appeal with the younger set, but I don't see nearly enough for a trend shift yet. Maybe the next big band would do it . . . ?

Anyone that thinks they don't deserve a headline tour can officially shut the hell up now. They are going to pass the latest from In Flames, Opeth, & Lacuna Coil easily at this rate. They are also going to outdraw tours from Blind Guardian & Stratovarius easily.

Dragonforce can headline wherever they want...I won't see them. No offense, but in my mind popularity does not equal quality...and certainly not ProgPower quality. If you booked them for PP8, I would still buy my gold badge and still go to the concert...but would not be around when Dragonforce took the stage.

But it seems like you are truly ANTI-DragonForce based on their popularity alone.

No one ever said that popularity = quality. The last couple IN FLAMES albums are proof of that.

Though, to say "I would not watch their set if they played Prog Power" really makes you come off as an arse hole.

It happens with almost every sub-genre of metal.
Look back to the late 80s / early 90's.
Testament got a lot of recognition, and went on big tours with Slayer, Priest, Maiden, etc.
Though many thrashers at the time were saying, "What about Overkill, Nuclear Assault, etc, etc."
It didn't mean that Testament were a BETTER band.
It's just what clicks at the time.

I agree, maybe he didn't. And I didn't make a comment towards him, I said in general. Don't you agree that it's stupid to hate something because of its popularity?

I wouldn't care if I weren't a fan before, and nor I think he should if he hated the band before. Do I feel like there are more deserving bands? Yes. Don't you?

And I'd love to see Blind Guardian becoming more popular. Gamma Ray...hmm...I'm not the biggest fan. And I wouldn't call them sellouts.
