You must be joking.

Anyways, I think ToT is their best by far.... they finally dropped their cheesiness and prog cliches and made an awesome epic metal album. And no typical crappy DT ballads too. (the 2-3 min interlude is not a ballad) They are probably the worst ballad writers ever. Space Dye Vest is their only good one.

Well thats an absolute load of shit and nonetheless cliche remarks about their songwriting. Trial of Tears owns every DT song other then A Change of Seasons. The live version only amplifies the feelings in the music played in that absolute epic song. Best albums I'd say would have to be I&M and Awake. Best overall quality for the average first time listener. My faves are Seasons and Infinity. Once again Kitchen+Sands = crushing emotion. Space Dye Vest was written by Kevin and he is no longer with them. I think that should be added because they don't ever play songs like that again. Scarred and Shadows on Awake are wonderful songs as well that didn't get mentioned.

The rapping on train of thought really blows, yet without that the song really kills. Well the lyrics of the same song also blow cock, but the rest of the album is quite cool. Especially the Vacant - Stream, of consciousness combo. Their best abum is metropolis pt 2. Buy. you won't regeret it

odd. my version only had 6 tracks...

it was downloaded.

got no 7 now though.

there isnt a track 8 is there?

I was going to say "return the cd" until I got to the second sentence.

Maybe check the songlist before saying that your "version" doesn't have enough tracks. I mean, when you download an album, how do you have a different version of an album? It's just a question of what you downloaded and what you didn't.

Scenes From A Memory
Awake
Train of Thought
Images and Words
A Change of Seasons
When Dream And Day Unite
Falling Into Infinity

That's my personal preference... the top 3 are their more heavy albums (but strangely I'm not a massive metalhead so I don't know why I like their heavy stuff better).

ToT has some of the most extensive Petrucci studio solos.

the very first album has a different singer. beware. (When Dream and Day Unite)

A Change of Seasons is actually an EP, so as an introduction it is cost effective. the title song is epic. the medly I can take or leave.

Live at the Marquee is an interesting look at the early band, but for live DT I prefer Once in a Livetime.

Scenes from a Memory is a concept album about repressed memories of a murder and reincarnation (?!?!?!) it has some great passages but like any concept album you have to be able to buy into the storyline.

Falling Into Infinity caused lots of consternation when it first came out for allegedly going "soft" but Peruvian Skies is an awesome song, although the live version of it on Livetime is probably better.

Awake has some awesome songs, including Space Dyed Vest by Kevin Moore, the band lost a decent songwriter when he left. Caught in a Web is awesome, but again, the version on Livetime is probably better.

I'll go out and say that Scenes From a Memory is the single greatest album I have ever heard. Get that first. The story is unbelievably good. It's very emotional, especially on Finally Free towards the end. I don't think the soloing is excessive. Also, the production is absolutely perfect on this album, and on Six Degrees. Bad production ruined ToT, a very mediocre DT album. Awake and I&W are great too.
