Drumagog not catching all the hits?

This isn't for everybody, but if you are not using the underlying snare track (read: no blending), I just manually go in and make those sections louder, or even just clean up the peaks to make "triggers." Hell, if I need another snare hit I will just amplify a quick section of noise to make a "trigger" for drumagog.

Like on blast beats and fast rolls, even if I have the sensitivity set super low it misses a few out. Tips?

Thanks

The only way to guarantee you're gonna get all of them is to midi-out the drum tracks and trigger Drumagog from them. This can take a bit of time, especially checking to make sure all the hits are there in midi form, but it is completely worth it!

Actually, I do this too. If the original snare track isn't gonna be used at all, I just take sections where it's lower velocity (blasts, fast rolls as you indicated), and clip, clip, raise gain in Cubase. Lifesafer!

apTrigga wrapped into PT8 works like a dream for triggering from MIDI if anybody is wondering.

Massey DTM + any sample player = win. I never and will never trigger samples from an audio source ever again. Triggers on every drum, create MIDI from triggers, done deal. Too many damn mic cables though.

How do get Massey DTM?

you are in for a rude awakening. i was on a conquest to get it for MONTHS including several emails and offers of money to mr massey himself...all of which he declined. the only way to obtain it is illegitimately, and it's dancing on the line of piracy, but that's debatable since it was released as a free product to existing massey customers...and has since been pulled, alledgedly due to a non-compete issue with TL drum rehab (which he worked on.) i feel justified anyway, having offered money directly to the creator himself and being forced into acquistions by other means.

and you won't find a torrent or anything like that, so don't even bother. literally the only way to get it is to find someone else that has it that is willing to share their setup and serial.

In all fairness Toontrack's Drumtracker is just as good as DTM, even more flexible actually, DTM is just great because it's built into the host. I still use Drumtracker in Reaper, so if you can't get DTM go and buy Drumtracker, it is about as good as it gets. Not every hit is gonna be phase accurate though so you have to double check and realign anything that's out, but same deal with DTM. And if you aren't already checking the phase on your Drumagog tracks and they still sound good enough to you, you won't be bothering with checking phase on the DTM or Drumtracker tracks either because the sample alignment in Drumagog is even worse.

this is very true, drumtracker is an acceptable alternative...just a little slower and with some extra steps.

Have you tried messing with the frequency filter? That's always worked for me. Never really had any problems with drumagog. Usually the only time I have to go in and manually clean up transients is on tom fills. Although I always use 2 tracks, 1 for main beats and 1 for fills and blasts. Joey laid out some settings before, but make sure you're using the advanced tab, all the way to the right, optimize for snare drum, auto align off.

I use to have problems with drumagog, now when recording drum tracks I mic the whole kit up and then put additional triggers on snare and kick (they are normally clipping like crazy), to make sure I have all the transients in place before any sampling goes on. Work great as I can blend the triggered tracks with the recorded tracks. Play with the resolution, take of auto align, and also in the advanced tab make sure the accuracy slider is pushed to the far right.

for most typical metal shit that's chock full of blastbeats and whatnot, i'll print each track twice with drumagog - i'll set it once so that it triggers properly on all the blastbeats, fills, and other quick/intricate shit. then i'll set it again so that it triggers properly on all the harder hits without flamming or false triggering, and consolidate the 2 tracks. sure you can spend a bunch of time fucking with it to get it right in 1 pass, but it's just so much easier this way.

or, if your PC is better than my POS, you can just copy the track and run 2 separate instances of drumagog, each with different settings

theres a nice Strip-Silence option in pro-tools, so you can split up all audio like snare and kick and such, best to look and listen carefully to make sure you're not cutting out any weak hits, but it certainly stops Drumagog from overtriggering...
