I'm half deaf. My hearing's only gonna get worse. I should wear them all the time. I don't wear them when i am doing soundchecks for bands etc. I don't feel the need to, although i should wear ear plugs or something during the gigs, but the only time i have protection is when i am wearing headphones to see what it sounds like when i am recording.

I hate wearing them but do so at all times during gigs. Most gigs down here are way too loud, as they tend to be all around the world. Bands either have ridiculously loud drumkits/drummers or guitarists that insist on turning up until everyone's ears bleed. Then there's also the audio engineers who've lost their hearing from years of pumping music and then perpetuate the entire blow everyone's brains out mentality.

I usually don't have earplugs in when I'm doing soundcheck with a band, or just fine-tuning their sound at the start of a set. Usually I'll have ear plugs out for one song, then for the rest they'll go in. This is with metal bands. I've worked with other bands in the past that haven't needed to be that loud at all. A lot of it is genre specific.

the average sound level of gigs here in the uk has dropped significantly since i was in my teens. The two opeth gigs i went to last year, you could hold a conversation with someone. Idot know ifthay have brought in laws for definate but it would seem that way.

the loudest ive heard in the last couple of years was fear factory, actually made my ears hurt.

I went to see motorhead 18 months ago and they were not as loud as they used to be, but when they left their guitars in front of their amps at the end, it was shocking, i actually put my hands over my ears for the entire duration of that feedback. I had actually bought ear plugs for that gig, but forgot to take them, this is the only time ive ever done it. My mates didnt cover their ears and they were much much worse in the days afterwards.

Im convinced my hearing was affected by gigs and nightclubs in my earlier years. I can remember seeing motorhead in 1990 and was in front of lemmy's bass bin. I was partially deaf the next day at school and the ringing in my ears lasted 3 days. Definately damaged me.

I was told that steve harris (iron maiden) is almost deaf these days.

^ Yeah I once went to a gig in which I had a ringing in my ears for the next 7 days. I dont think Ive done any permanent damage yet but I really would like to avoid another week of constant ringing at all costs!

Also, Ive been told many are driven insane once their ears are damaged to a point where the ringing doesnt stop, and kill themselves. Not sure how true that is, but I value my sanity, so the whole "grow a pair" mentality held by some is just stupid.

never used earplugs.
i went to see alec empire a couple weeks ago. it would have been good to bring ear plugs to that. but my ears didn't bleed too much afterwards. that was surprising.

I have a custom pair. Had 'em molded in college. But I think the filters might be crap by now. I got them mostlyfor when my band rehearsed. The space was tight, so my right ear wasalways dangerously close to the drummers cymbals... (we practiced in a trailer). I often put them in for the opening act and take 'em outfor the headliner. Response doesn't seem so flat anymore. Good $125 spent backin 1993, though.

I just buy the $1 foam ones from the chemist, they work fine for me. I don't think they kill the sound at all - if anything I find it easier to hear what the band is playing than without them. And I'm not gonna get some special custom ones cause I'll just lose them, heh.

The only time I've actually wanted something ear-splittingly loud was Merzbow. That was a surprisingly (relatively) quiet show. Strangely hypnotic, however.

yes its strange what a little by of muffling can do....i went to see nevermore and they sounded better in the toilets than in the room. I didnt hang around in there though people might have got the wrong idea.

'tis called tinnitus my dear boy. Ive had it all my life as far as i can remember. I'm used to it. I only notice when i'm in bed and its all quiet.

They dont go insane and kill themselves. My dad has it. back when he was in college he went to see sabbath at some local school and when they played their first notes the speakers blew. Then they got new ones out there, they played again, and the speakers blew again. Ever since then, my dad has had rining in his ears.

Tinnitus is no joke, folks. As people who love music, you really ought to take care of your ears. I don't go to many shows, so I'm not really worried about only wearing plugs for the openers. Hearing loss is generally a function of volume over time, and I haven't really piled up the hours.

The other way we're all making ourselves more deaf is by wearing headphones and listening loud. This, I am guilty of, and it scares me a bit. I always try to listen as quietly as I can but still enjoy it. But I've done my share of lawn mowing with headphones on, and I have to crank the shit out of my iPod to be able to hear it over the growl of the mower. When I finish, my ears are usually ringing. I've taken to wearing over-the-ear headphones and consequently don't have to listen as loud. Best would be noise cancelling over the ear style headphones, I guess.

I was told by the Joey Kramer's (Aerosmith) stepdaughter that he got a vacation home where the crickets masked his tinnitus (she said they were out of phase of them, so they canceled...but I doubt that was the reality of the situation in retrospect).

Good article on tinnitus.
