EL34 vs. 6L6 in a 2 ch. Dual Rectifier

Well I won't give the answers just yet, but one other thing I forgot to mention is the amp was substantially louder with EL34's in it, so I had to lower the master volume to keep the two peaking at around the same level (I didn't adjust the mic preamp gain). Could be how the amp is biased for one type vs. the other, or it could be due to them being different brands (Winged C 6L6's, Ruby EL34's)...

its such a subtle difference!

sounds great though dude!
quick off topic question...

did you paint your grill on your two channel black or did it come like that>?

I've read that the bias is more "correct" and hotter when running EL34's in Rectos...that may be why it's louder.

A is a hair brighter which normally would point to A being EL34's, but it's hard for me to say...in my DR, 6L6's were definitely more harsh on the top end and a bit more "tubby" sounding. I never miced to compare the difference but in the room the difference was definitely quite noticeable. I prefer A and would probably say that A is the EL34 clip judging by the low frequencies. The low-end in B sounds more like 6L6's.

Thanks man! And yeah, I painted it myself, and it looked great...until I put dish towels on it (before it had dried fully) and stacked books on top of them to stick it back onto the headshell, so when I pulled them off, lint-city! :( Some light-grit sanding and another coat should make it good as new, I just have to get around to it :D

Yeah, I've read that as well - I even recall someone on here saying he ran 6L6's in his recto with the switch set to EL34...but I love my amp just a bit too much to chance that! :yow:

hehe i found myself singing along there :p

i'm not sure which i prefer.........b has a more tone to my ears, but a sounds slightly tighter. I think the ultimate choice can only come from an individual messing around with both and seeing what they can achieve with each

i think i would like to do the same to mine :)

how did you get the plating off?

A whole lot of tugging and cursing! :D Since it's a pretty old model, it was already separating a bit, but that is some strong freakin' double-sided tape - you may have an easier time removing the chassis, masking the headshell, and just sanding/painting it while it's on there! And on that note, I got a sort of sanding sponge-type thing at the Home Depot with a really coarse grit, assaulted the diamond plate, then primed it, then painted (using metal paint I got at an auto parts store)

And I suppose there have been enough guesses that I can reveal the answers - A is actually 6L6, and B is EL34; your experience served you well Brett, even if you did end up guessing wrong! ;)

Yeah, I'm thinking the SLIGHT comparative harshness I hear from the 6L6's comes from crossover distortion from them being biased colder; maybe that's why Mesa recommends buying their tubes, cuz they specifically pick (and relabel  ) the ones that would work best with such a cold bias. Or they could just be full of it! Perhaps I should investigate how much it would cost to get my amp modded to have adjustable bias...
