EL34 vs. 6L6 in a 2 ch. Dual Rectifier

FWIW, the difference between the two tube types is quite a bit more noticable without a tube screamer in front of the amp...at least from my experience.

Haha! I had a feeling I was wrong since I remember some GS threads where people quite convincingly showed that those tubes might react oppositional than what someone would expect.

Either way, 6L6 wins again :D

Agreed! :D

I'll just chock this up as one more reason not to like Mesa... Assholes ruined the whole purpose of having the option of EL34s or 6L6s.

Are the Dual and Triple Recs this unchanging when it comes to different brands/types of preamp tubes too?

Tread carefully there Nate :Smug: :Saint: I haven't experimented with difference preamp tubes in my Recto, but I'd imagine they'd make about as much difference as in my Tiny Terror, which is to say noticeable but very subtle

Fuck the tubes man either way that is a great tone!

Thanks a lot dude! :)

Haha, well to me, playing a Rectifier distorted without a Tube Screamer is like playing it with one of the tubes missing! :D

I couldn't play my Rectifier without a Tube Screamer when it had the 6L6's in it...just WAYYYY too boomy and muddy. I do howevery enjoy playing it without a TS with the E34L's for more sludgy riffage and for grind stuff. I rarely used the TS when I played with my grind/death band...it didn't sound great by itself but when blended with the other guitarist's 2 channel Triple Rec, it was just ridiculous. To my ears, the latest Bloodbath sounds like a EL34-loaded Rectifier without a TS driving it.

I swapped out the stock Mesa preamp tubes for JJ's in my DR, and the difference was definitely noticeable, but still pretty subtle. I just went for a standard JJ set...you can get special "high gain" sets, etc., and I'm sure those make more of a difference.

Maybe, but there's definitely some sort of solid-state distortion going on there, probably an HM-2 - sounds to me like when Lasse used a Metal Zone to drive his Rectifier; the majority of the distortion came from the amp, but enough was coming from the MZ to add a really cool old-school feeling. However, I don't record anyone else, I tweak my amp only for tones that sound good to me, and those always involve the TS! (probably because I really don't like sludge or grind :D)

Well, I will admit that I heard how much brighter and clearer A) was and assumed it would be EL34s, especially after I heard the aggressive output and slightly beefier low end of B). I got it backwards, I guess. For reference, I also preferred A) moderately, though they are both excellent sounds.

Kudos to Marcus for yet another successful and engaging blind test.

Subtle difference for me...You can barely notice it in a mix. Also with KT77, I switched the original EL34 with them in my Savage but the sound still remained the same at 95%.

For the record, I also loved both A and B. I couldn't hear a difference on my end. Again, I have a lame stereo and I didn't crank it up.

I read on The Gear Page about 'tube rolling' where guys would try different brands of the same type of tubes in different slots til they found a spot that it sounded best in. I thought that shit was just pure snobbery to be honest but With my PittBull, I re-tubed it a few months back and just going from one brand to another made a very noticeable difference. A lot of the good players here in Columbus seem to favor Mesa Dual Recs or Peavey 5150s and they all seem to lean towards JJ's too. I get the impression some amps are more sensitive to the differences in tubes.
