I'm still trying to figure out what the big deal with this album is. Every song sounds nearly identical, each one being a horrible mish mash of shitty vocals, far too loud spacey keyboards, and indecipherable riffs. All I ever hear is an 8 year old "growling," some woo woo keyboards, the occasional booming sound (I guess those are toms, can't really tell), and THAT STUPIDLY LOUD FUCKING RIDE CYMBAL. It's far from being the worst album I've ever heard, but after giving this album many many chances, it is still very sub par.

So should I even bother with Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk? From what I understand it's vastly different.

Mayhem "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas"
Burzum "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss"
Helheim "Jormundgand"
Bathory "Blood Fire Death"
Darkthrone "Transilvanian Hunger"
Nokturnal Mortum "Goat Horns"
Taake "Nattestid Ser Porten Vid"
Manes "Under Ein Blodraud Maane"
any Negurã Bunget
Empyrium - all
Agalloch - Pale Folklore
Celtic Frost "To Mega Therion"

These are the albums I have since picked up from my GIVE ME BLACK METAL thread last October, and I find each one infinitely better than this Emperor album, particularly Taake - Nattestid and Negurâ Bunget - 'N Crugu Bradului.

Get shot.

Yea. ITNE is my favorite emperor album, and probably one of my favorite releases too. If productions a problem for you, maybe just try tweaking your EQ a bit. Other than that, ehn.

First of all, Emperor are my fav black metal band.
ITNE (in MY opinion) has more influential value, than musical value. It was the first majestic black metal album, and many others tried to copy it. I just "like" it.
Now "Anthems .." is my favourite black metal album ever, it is so PERFECT, and i think that you should BOTHER bying it. Trust me (or dont, its up to you).
It is very different than ITNE. Anthems is more EPIC, atmospheric, the riffs are a lot better, the production is more chaotic AND more clear at the same time. Also it is more technical, melodic and generally it has so much beautiful music. Also the lyrics are amazing poetry.

Anthems is better IMO. But there are many more black metal albums I reach for before even looking in Emperor's direction.

(the last two have not aged well at all)

EDIT - Where the fuck is Graveland in that list?

Jeez . . . how can you NOT like In the Nightside Eclipse. Anthems is entirely different, and I would actually recommend Anthems only if you like a bit more progressive approach. The production is a little better, but the big difference is in their new-found love of prog.

I think the production is my main hindrance with this album. There is way too much going on and since it sounds so muddy, everything gets lost in this big blender of noise. I've grown to like dirty production too, but this one just sounds poopy.

Like I said, I don't hate it, I just can't get into it.

i concur.
the only memorable song on that album is inno a satana, the rest, like you said, sounds alomst identical and the production is crap. it's not a good idea having harsh production (intended or not) on an album with so many layers, at most times it only becomes a rising and falling hiss. the songs i heard from "live cermony" sounded a lot better actually, mostly due to the fact that the riffs where audible i assume.

In The Nightside Eclipse is an amazing release. Quite possibly my favourite black metal record of all time. However, it did take me some time before I realised how good it actually is. But when it first clicked.. Twas a jaw-dropping moment.

Into the Infinity of Thoughts is one of the best black metal compositions ever, flawed production or not. That said, I still think Emperor improved with time, and I enjoy Prometheus the most of our their releases...luckily, I don't have any black metal credibility to lose. :)

I have Anthems and Prometheus, but I've never gotten around to listening to Prometheus. Anthems on the other hand I made sure to get to and I'm glad I did, its an excellent album. I obviously can't compare it to In the Nightside Eclipse, but I'd recommend it nonetheless.
