Malmsteen is "dark", but he's also gay. you want bands like samael, the gault, xasthur, and burzum to be lumped in with malmsteen?
hey, it's not we don't already have the homoerotic likes of CoF and CoB lumped in the "extreme" genre to begin with

Umm... anything except Prometheus. IMO that album doesn't really show what they're capable of, or what they're all about. Having a stellar production doesn't really help the fact the music is weak. My favourite would be Anthems.

^ haha. most of my posts are attempts at sarcasm and shouldn't be taken seriously, really.

har har. The point was/is- its unfortunate to see everyone post in the same banal "jaded, disillusioned, sarcastic, etc." manner.

Every time you post its categorically wrong, and Im sick of reading BS.

i guess you disagree more about him not recommending prometheus. well, it's also my least favorite emperor album. the first two are far more fierce and create an overall atmosphere that the last two albums only occasionally get close to. on prometheus 'thorns on my grave' is excellent but 'depraved' and a couple other tracks in the middle of the album do not reach the same standard. i certainly would recommend anthems and nightside before prometheus to someone who is new to the band.

The issue is not simply a matter of "favorites", and neither should be the recommendations.

Prometheus certainly has "atmosphere", and very developed and strong composition. Take the opening to "The Tongue of Fire" or "Wordless Chamber"- incredible layering and drum work that goes far beyond the emphasis on speed found on IX, and to a large degree, Anthems as well. What makes Emperor great is not the blastbeats, its when they are more subtle and let the melody form the intensity.

edit: I do agree that their early work had a raw ferocity that is not found on later works, nor should it. That is what makes Prometheus great- its weathered and very somber.

I enjoy all the Emperor albums as each have different strengths (and weak moments occasionally) and evolving sound. My faves from that band have changed over the years. If I had to pick one right at the moment it'd be Equilibrium, though I'm still amazed at how good Wrath of the Tyrant is.

you must be a pretty busy guy. did you just wake up this morning finally and decide you wanted to hear the most popular extreme metal band of all time? :erk:

Though I respect your vast knowledge of music NFU, that post just came off as wanky and trying to hard to be funny.. Maybe keep to the musical guru side of things as your comedy is B grade at best:p

Well thanks for the recommendatins guys, my mate has ix equilibrium and I've heard a wee bit of that which sounded cool but I might check out Darkside or something next (depending on what my local CD store stocks)
