Engl e530 or Sansamp PSA1 for direct rec.?

I must say that I really really dig Rammstein´s guitar tone :) (maybe I can say it´s my ideal) Could that huge number of layered guitars make huge difference in sound or it is only cherry on top of a cake and you can get almost "their" sound by simple double/quadtracking?

I really like Sansamp´s midrange (tons of industrial-ish character and personality!) and bass (I tune drop-A), but treble area is THE problem IMHO. Maybe I´ll try to cut it a bit :)

I own both a PSA 1.1 and an e530....bloody good combined with GuitarHacks impulses or a poweramp and Palmer PDI-03.

It's just a matter of investing the time to tweak.

My chain for the PSA1.....Guitar > PSA input > PSA output (line level) > Fireface 400 > Cubase > Guitarhack Impulses > UAD Neve 1073 EQ. I don't like the stock presets much on the PSA 1 so tend to spend a lot of time dialing in tones depending on what guitar I'm using. It tends to sound best with my old '89 ESP Horizon with an EMG 81.

Have used the same setup for the Engl e530 as well but now use a power amp and Palmer PDI-03 for that.

Thanks... one think that I think is really exciting about PSA1 is extremely easy "reamping" to it... you can record dry guitar tracks (while monitoring thru PSA1), align them and then send it to PSA1 (use it as outboard effect instead of preamp)... awesome

I experimented a lot with sansamp´s settings and impulses and I figured out that this is probably THE way. :headbang: You just must find the right impulse and carefully matched setting for it (almost no Buzz and lower the Bass knob!). With right impulse (usually that labelled "sneap setting" works good :) that annoying fizz is gone. I´m very excited and sorry for my previous questions... It seems that it was only my lack of experience.

The Unavoidable: I´ll post something, but it´s too early, I must experiment with it a bit more to get decent results, I think I only discovered the way, but not exactly GREAT setting yet...

I think my main fault was too much bass dialed on Sansamp. And over-using of every knobs :) (too much Gain, too much Buzz...) I also discovered that you can dial many Highs and it will not sound fizzy as hell with the right impulse! I thought that more Highs than, say, at 1 o´clock sounds totally unuseable fizzy, but It was only my fault in searching for right impulses IMHO.

Sansamp knobs are extremely sensitive, to the point of being ridicuolus, maybe is a good think, as you say highs more than 1 o clock are unusuable, i often leave it around noon or less, the buzz knob is really usefull but i would like the knob to be less bassy.

Great that you have achieved a good sound with impulses. if you want to hear the sansamp in action with an amp, check my thread.

Now I must figure out how to combine standard guitar cab impulse with impulse of ampeg bass cab (and use only low end from it, which is really nice and tight)... Maybe it is stupid idea but why not to try? (Especially if I play dropped-A IMHO)

No, only doubletracked (and I´m pretty bad guitarist so it is not tight I think)... no processing, only few dB on EQ here and there... Do you think that If I´ll continue to search for right impulse/sansamp setting and with carefully used EQ it can be good tone one day? Is this way (in clip) good or bad?

It sounds good but not dry/tight enough. Start from here (tighter playing, pick harder, less gain, no reverb/delay).

How are you doing this?

Rupturemetal: well, It is just an idea, I need to buy di-box to realise it. I think it must works!

Guitar signal to di-box, and then from di-box "thru" output to PSA1, but just for monitoring, and from normal output to preamp and to AD converter. Then you can align that dry signal, correct it and make it tight, and then you can send this dry tracks to Sansamp via normal line level output of soundcard to sansamp´s line level input and distort them. You can do this during mix too, and so you can adjust Sansamp´s setting to fit the song perfectly.

I didn´t tried yet- do you think that plugging guitar to preamp input on PSA1 will sounds and react the same as line input (signal from computer)?
