Hi
Today I did some experiments with my ENGL and my 2x12 with a sm57.
I did 3 clips with the best settings I found (recorded at room level)
I'm not very happy (as usual) of the sound....but probably for a very goood sound I need a good 4x12.
Sorry for the sloppy playin'....

Conquer All riff -> http://www.esnips.com/doc/f2c87058-da3a-4baf-b18d-ebdcd08ec837/Cabinet_test_Conquer

Body Hammer riff -> http://www.esnips.com/doc/1ea5f51e-8426-4cb1-b7bb-80cf1ccfbc96/Cabinet_test_Hammer

Slow Rithm riff -> http://www.esnips.com/doc/f5337b58-52aa-45b3-b6c5-acc5bb52ec61/Cabinet_test_Raw

What do you think?
Thanks

First of all... are those 100 % raw or is there some HP-LP-EQ-whatever on them ?

It's not bad but i think it could sound better. At now i would say there is too much air. So if post-eq-ing is not involved I'd go for slight amp settings adjustments : less gain, a bit less presence or treble, and maybe a different mic positioning.

Can you describe your signal chain/settings/everything ? Maybe post a picture of the mic position as well ?

I don't think the "2x12 vs 4x12" is to blame here.

Here is the settings
Gain: 11 o'clock
Lead: 13 o'clock (in conquer all and body hammer) and 11 o'clock (rithm)
Bass: 13 o'clock
Mids: 12 o'clock
treb: 12 o'clock
Hi-range suppressor: 11 o'clock
pre: room level
master: max
pres: 13 o'clock

Schecter C1 with emg81

Sm57 pointing the usual dustcap/cone position...but moved a little more to the cone. Sm57 direct in my firepod.
The sample are raw except a HP/LP eq at 60Hz/12Khz.

I'm surprised since your signal chain/settings seem pretty normal... i wouldn't expect the kind of tone you finally got (not shitty at all but not 100 % right either IMO).

I'd try less gain (though i don't know how you're supposed to deal with the "gain" + "lead" knobs), messing up with the "hi-range suppressor" knob and maybe a tad less presence if needed after.
And finally having a slightly more "angled" mic position also, and having the mic closer to the grille also (i got the same kind of "air"-ish sound when i miked my ENGL not so close to the grille).

By the way what kind of cab do you have ?

I checked the Darkane's Savage settings....they use crazy sets

Gain: 3 o'clock
Lead: 1 o'clock

Bass: 9o'clock
Mids: 2 o'clock
treb: 12 o'clock

Hi-range: 2 o'clock

Lot of gain!!!

Gain: 15o'clock
Lead: 13o'clock

Bass: 9o'clock
Mids: 14o'clock
treb: 12o'clock

Hi-range: 14o'clock

Lot of gain!!!

What do you mean by 13, 14 and 15 o clock? Do you mean 1, 2 and 3 o clock? Are you using military time?

Sounds quite boxy to me.
I'd suggest turning your amp up (SM57's scream the house down when they've got some air moving towards them ;)) and trying a different mic position. I find that more "direct" sounding guitar tracks are easier to mix, and sound better too, unless you're going for a fairly odd tone.
The boxy sound worked great on one of my old band's tracks. The music and the tone were just right for each other. That hasn't been the case with anything else I've ever worked on though.
