I was reccommended Enslaved by many of you on this forum, and I'd like to know your opinion on their best cd(s).

Thx in advance.

Start out with Vikingligr Veldi, the best of their early works and Below the Lights, the best of their more recent works. This should give you a good picture of their two most prominent styles.

I don't think Frost is particularly good. There's a few moments of bad riffage and disjointed songwriting on there and a sucky attempt at vocal harmony. Svarte Vidder is a good song though. I also think Mardraum and Below the Light's are a little overrated. Mardraum in particular suffers from an overabundance of pentatonic-based 70's psychedelic rock riffs that neither reach melodic resolution nor carry on a logical development. Riffs like that are completely out of context on an extreme metal album.

Gee you're gonna hate Isa, its packed with progressive riffs, stylings and vocals. Personally I think the progressive riffs work very well within their sound and works suprisingly well along side the more black metal parts. Personally I think that the progressive elements have been in Enslaved sound since the beggining and has always been one of the things that have made them so unique. Of course they have come more and more forward as time has gone on...

I like Monumension the best. Its very progressive, and may be a bit hard to get a hold on, but once you do, its quite excellent.

I found Frost to be rather boring.
It is too fast to... leave anything for the listener.
It has a really frosty atmosphere but it is neither brutal nor epic. -It just goes by like the picture of a fjord painted on a highspeed train.

Are there albums of Enslaved that are atmospheric? epic? brutal?
Anything of that?

I've never really given Enslaved a chance until I picked up Vikingligr Veldi like 2 weeks ago (it was used and cheap so I gave it a try) and it is a great release. I love this album and I really recommend it.
